The Newburyport girls indoor track program graduated out one of the best senior classes in recent memory.
Not hyperbole to say.
Morgan Felts and Devin Stroope are two of the best athletes in school history, and their combined list of records would take a full article to get through. Then between Lucy Buchmayr — the school’s record holder in the 55-meter hurdles — and names like Ciara Geraghty and Lily Pilz, it truly was an epic class that left behind a lasting mark.
But this is Newburyport we’re talking about … and the “next generation” is here.
Both Margaux Dupuis and Audrey Roebuck were Daily News All-Stars as freshmen last year between the winter and spring track seasons, and they both returned in a big way during the first CAL meet of the year last weekend. Dupuis won the 55-hurdles with the best time of any CAL athlete on the day (8.96), and Roebuck did the same in the 300 (43.46) to lead the Newburyport girls to a season-opening win over rival Pentucket, 65-35.
The duo then also ran on the winning 4×400 relay alongside Cameron Todd and McKenna Felts (4:44.03). The Clippers would get other wins from: Skylar Ikemoto in the long jump (15-8.50), Lydia Boddy in the 2-Mile (12:38.62), Ella Peddie in the 1000 (3:31.58), Maeve Marino in the 600 (1:55.04) and Morgan Boddy in the Mile (6:00.74).
Meanwhile, the Newburyport boys were also able to do enough to take down Pentucket for the 58-42 victory. Senior Kyle Lisauskas — our reigning Daily News MVP — got off to an excellent start, beating his own personal record to win the 55-hurdles (7.86). Picking up other wins for the Clippers were: David Walker in the high jump (5-8), Judah Pilz in the long jump (19-5.00), John DeJordy in the 2-Mile (11:01.51), Michael Mohoric in the 1000 (2:41.02) and the 4×400 relay team of Mohoric, Lisauskas, Baylor Yim and John Murray (3:39.27).
“The boys won a tough one against a very good Pentucket team, lead by senior captain Kyle Lisauskas who set a new personal best in the hurdles,” said Newburyport coach Brian Moore. “Then on the girls side, despite graduating what could have been the best senior class in recent years, the winning ways continued led by super sophomores Margaux Dupuis and Audrey Roebuck, who each won their individual events with CAL-leading times.”
Moving over to the other side of the dual meet, it was a heck of a start to the year for Sawyer Call. The Pentucket sophomore won all three of her events, taking the 55-meter dash (8.09), the high jump (4-8), and winning with the 4×200 relay team alongside Addie Roach, Shenaz Sayani and Kate Sweeney (1:56.29). The Panthers then also saw Allie Bleichfield win the shot put (27-11).
“Sawyer is building on a very impressive freshman season,” said Pentucket coach J.C. Honer. “What a fantastic start to her season this year!”
Finally, the Pentucket boys got wins from: Shea Mutti in the shot put (40-6.50), Liam Foley in the dash (6.83), Zack Hannula in the 600 (1:27.99), Gabe MacLeod in the 300 (36.15), Grayson Shikes in the Mile (4:47:13) and the 4×200 team of MacLeod, Foley, Matt Silva and Aiden Napolitano (1:35.66).
AMESBURY: Season-opening wins for both teams
You can’t really ask for much better of a start for the Amesbury indoor track program.
Both teams took on Lynnfield during the first CAL meet of the year over the weekend, and both were able to come away with wins. The boys took down the Pioneers, 71.50-28.50, while the girls managed to hold on for a 54-45 victory.
For the girls, picking up firsts were: Lexi Desmond in the 300 (47.74), Della Hildt in the 600 (1:57.89), Anna Kirby in the 1000 (3:47.91), Eva Hunt in the shot put (28-2), Katie Bigos in the high jump (4-8), Hope Shanahan in the long jump (13-9.25) and the 4×200 relay team of Kaia Bartosik, Shanahan, Desmond and Emme Houlihan (1:57.93).
Then for the boys, winning events were: Joe Puleo in the 55-meter (6.87), Dane Hall in the 600 (1:35.77), Brodie Hall in the 1000 (3:03.86), Josiah Fugate in the Mile (4:42.27), Ty Giangregorio in the 2-Mile (11:14.47), Connor Scialdone in the 55-hurdles (8.64) and high jump (5-8), Noah Blouin in the long jump (20-1) and Marcus Colon in the shot put (50-4.75).
“Both teams started off the season with wins and I could not be happier for them,” said Amesbury coach Ernie Bissaillon. “You never know what to expect at the first meet of the season. But with continued consistent effort, both teams should continue to improve over the season.”
