In its legitimate quest for a repeat Division 3 State Championship this spring, the Newburyport girls lacrosse team of course had more than a handful of talented scorers.
But even still, Lilly Pons found a way to separate herself.
The senior, who will be playing collegiately at Division 1 Furman next year, is not yet done her high school career. However, Pons was just recently named the CAL Kinney MVP, and heading into the Clippers’ Division 3 quarterfinal game this weekend, she currently sits at 78 goals with 37 assists for the year. Her ability to find the back of the net is elite, but what pushed her over the hump to winning league MVP this spring was her work stepping into the draw circle.
Pons was joined on the 15-person All-CAL squad by teammates Olivia McDonald, Rita Cahalane and Reese Bromby.
McDonald — a Division 1 Colgate commit — wraps up her Newburyport career as a three-time All-CAL selection, and currently has 45 goals with 24 assists this spring. Cahalane is a force in the draw and has 16 goals with 31 assists, while Bromby — a UMass Amherst commit — has 80 goals with 33 assists. Finally, the Clippers had a pair make the CAL All-Star list with goalie Kate Keller (Northwestern) and midfielder Josie Palma.
Elsewhere, Pentucket had two All-CAL selections.
Both juniors, Kate Conover and Ella Palmer made the 15-person First Team for the Panthers. Conover finished up the spring with 42 goals and 31 assists, while Palmer finished second on the team with 39 goals and 24 assists. Their teammates, Cat Colvin and Kat Flaherty — who are also still juniors — were named CAL All-Stars.
And finally, Georgetown senior Molly Giguere (89g, 18a) was named All-CAL, while teammates Lyla Schneider and Sam McClure made Second Team. For Triton, sophomore Delaney Quinn and Riley McDonald were named CAL All-Stars.
