CAIRO – The Cairo Syrupmakers had to tweak their football schedule a couple of weeks away from the start of the season.
The Grady County School District Facebook page confirmed that Wakulla County (Fla.) had canceled the two schools’ game which was scheduled for Sept. 20. It left the Syrupmakers with just nine games. Last week, however, Cairo finalized a game date with Leon High (Fla.), who will come to Cairo the next two seasons.
Cairo will host Leon on Oct. 4, the date the Syrupmakers had originally scheduled to play Monroe. Cairo’s game with Monroe has been moved to Oct. 11, originally an open date for the Syrupmakers.
“We hate that we were forced to schedule a game on the Friday of our school system’s fall break (Oct. 11), but we had no other choice,” said Cairo Athletic Director Sam Holland in the facebook post. “We burnt the phones up calling schools and trying to make a deal that would work for us and our opponent, and this was our solution.”
Cairo’s open date will be Sept. 20.
The Syrupmakers’ season opener is slated for Aug. 23 at Thomas County Central.
