Heading into its 10th season of varsity competition, it’s clear to see that volleyball has carved out its own healthy niche at Greater Lawrence Tech in the spring.
Coach Karla Mahoney’s Reggies have qualified for the postseason two straight years, three of the last four and six of nine overall.
Volleyball matters, and Mahoney brings back a talented, dedicated crew with five returning starters.
“We return a strong team, who worked on their volleyball skills in the off-season playing club and playing at the local park,” said Mahoney.
Anchoring the Reggies’ attack is setter Anthony Rubim. He heads into his senior season with 1,000 career assists in the book. The four-year starter was an Eagle-Tribune All-Star last spring and twice has been a Commonwealth Conference All-Star.
Rival Whittier Tech, now in its fourth year of varsity competition, is hoping to hunt for its first-ever postseason appearance.
“This is the fourth year of the program. These players came from PE class to play competitive volleyball,” said coach Kevin Bradley. “This is the year everything turns around, as all the players have worked hard to improve.”
Seniors Miguel Robles and Nate Gutierrez power the Wildcats, who expect to take a giant step forward after a five-win campaign in 2025.
