PLATTSBURGH — Landen Duprey scored two goals and Saranac protected a third-period lead while skating to a 3-1 victory over Fayetteville-Manlius in non-league hockey on Saturday afternoon.
“Both teams played with really good pace through the first two periods,” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “The third period didn’t have as much flow, but we were able to play with and hold a lead.
“We hope to use this win and build some momentum as we head into league play this week.”
Duprey opened the scoring midway through the second period and then Brody Macomber made it 2-0 six minutes into the third.
Joey Leveroni’s goal cut Fayetteville-Manlius’ deficit in half two minutes later, but the Spartans sealed the win on Duprey’s empty-net goal in the final minute.
Ashtyn Catlin, Landon Giroux and Adrian Barnes each had two assists for Saranac (6-6-1) and Mason Patnode stopped 27 shots in the Spartans’ nets.
Chris Finger made 24 stops for the visitors.
“We knew this would likely be a low-scoring game playing against a really good goaltender like Finger,” Knowles said. “Mason Patnode was really good for us as well.
“I was really happy with our energy and effort playing back to back on a short turnaround. Last weekend, we had no gas in our tank on the second day, so our guys did a better job this weekend preparing themselves for the second day.”

GREECE STORM 12
NORTHEASTERN CLINTON 3
ROUSES POINT — Spencer Griffin accounted for four goals and three assists and Carter Griffin a goal and five assists to help give the Greece Storm a non-conference win over the Cougars.
Owen Ebersol, Scott Wrye and Ben Bresnahan scored the NCCS goals.
The Cougars trailed 4-2 after one period, but gave up five unanswered goals in the second.
“After a long break, I thought we would be ready to play today,” NCCS coach Scott Lafountain said. “This was not the case, not even close. I know we are a better team than this and will show it. To get outshot only 35-34 and lose 12-3 is very frustrating.
“On the positive not, Ben Bresnahan scored his first-career goal. He’s such a hard-working kid, so we are happy for him.”

FRIDAY
GREECE STORM 4
SARANAC 3
PLATTSBURGH — Third-period goals by Camden Monks and Alan Wilkins rallied the Greece Storm to its close win over the Spartans in non-conference play.
Landen Duprey, Nolan Miner and Ashtyn Catlin scored goals for Saranac, which lost despite a 42-22 advantage in shots on goal. Adrian Barnes and Duprey added a couple of assists each for the Spartans.
Saranac held a 2-1 lead after one period and had a 3-1 advantage until Greece got one back late in the second.
“We played really well in all three periods, but had a tough time getting pucks past their goaltender (Stratos Triantafilou),” Saranac coach Robby Knowles said. “I thought he played very well for them, especially in the second period. We outshot them by a combined 27-11 in the second and third periods, and had only one goal to show for it.
“The biggest thing we need to get better at is scoring goals inside the six-foot range around the net. When you are playing against a good goaltender, you need to get to the dirty areas and clean up rebounds.
“Greece played extremely physical, so this was also a good test for us in that department.”

TUPPER LAKE — Griffin Shaheen scored three of his team’s four second-period goals and the Lumberjacks defeated the Hornets in a non-conference game.
Shaheen finished with four goals in all.
Tupper Lake broke a scoreless tie with four goals in the second and added two in the third after Braeden Calkins tallied twice in the third to bring the Hornets back to with 4-2.
Owen Chapple stopped 28 of 34 shots in the PHS nets.
“We got the start we wanted but shot ourselves in the foot by making too many costly mistakes in the second period,” PHS coach Joe Tolosky said.
“The good news is these mistakes are avoidable, but we have to learn from them and sharpen our game now heading into the final stretch.”
