A 53-year-old Buffalo man has been charged with the murder of a 35-year-old woman in Sanborn.
Lewiston police say they were called to a home on Buffalo Street about 5:15 p.m. Saturday to check the welfare of a woman living there. Arriving officers found Alexis Skoczylas, 35, dead inside the home.
Following an investigation, Lance L. Woods, 53, of Buffalo, was arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Woods was processed and transported to the Niagara County jail, where he awaits an arraignment.
Woods is a member of the Buffalo Police Department, according to Channel 2 News.
“There is a person of interest who is being detained and questioned, and the Buffalo Police Department Internal Affairs Unit has been notified that the person is a member of the Buffalo Police Department,” Buffalo Mayor Sean Ryan told the news station on Sunday.
Lewiston police say they were assisted in the investigation by the Niagara County Sheriff’s Office, Niagara Falls Police Department, Niagara County District Attorney’s Office, as well as the Buffalo and Cheektowaga police departments. The New York State Attorney General’s Office of Special Investigations was also involved.
Lewiston Police Chief Michael Salada said the murder remains an active investigation and additional information will be released as it becomes available.
