SARANAC 59
PLATTSBURGH 38
SARANAC — Saranac overcame the Plattsburgh High pressure to pull away, winning 59-38.
What started as a close game saw the Spartans hold just a one-point lead at the break at 23-22. But it wouldn’t last as they pulled away.
Maddie Gagnier was a monster with a double-double of 26 points and 20 rebounds, but it wasn’t just Gangnier. The entire team played a phenomenal second half, head coach Tim Newell said.
Ava Weiss led the Hornets with a team-high 17 points.
“Coming into this game, we knew we would have to handle Plattsburgh pressure,” Newell said. “We didn’t do that very well to start the game, falling behind 11 to 2. The girls finally settled down to take a one-point lead into the half, 23 to 22. We made some defensive adjustments at halftime, and the girls executed well offensively.
“Maddie Gagnier had a monster game. Elizabeth Recore had a strong game, scoring 11 points and did a nice job in our zone defense. Alyse Liberty played well, attacking the basket in our transition game, scoring seven points, and Hannah Forgette had a nice game distributing the basketball with seven assists.
“Overall, I was pleased with the girls’ effort on both sides of the ball. We still have to improve the value of the basketball, as we had 21 turnovers.”
