A Crossville man had his bond revoked as a result of new charges against him while he was out of jail on bond in an unrelated case. Judge Shawn Fry noted in taking the action, the defendant would be entitled to a speedy trial.
James Lee Quarry, 51, Lake Tansi area, was out of jail under a $1,500 bond posted after being indicted in June on a charge of vandalism of up to $1,000 in an incident investigated by Crossville Police Department. Quarry was also out on a $5,000 bond on a charge of violation of the sex offender registry law.
In the midst of those legal woes, Quarry was arrested on Feb. 15 on a charge of aggravated assault after being accused of brandishing a knife at a local motel. Bond in that case was set for $50,000.
On June 21, a teen and his friend were at the Speedway off West Ave. when a vehicle passed by, driven by Quarry, with a woman screaming. The youth went to check on the woman and took a photo of a license plate on the vehicle Quarry was driving.
Quarry is alleged to have responded by displaying a handgun.
Assistant District Attorney Allison Null argued that while released from jail under bond, Quarry “continued his bad behavior … the state has great concerns that while out of jail on bond for assault” another assault was alleged.
Defense attorney Jeff Vires countered that the weapon was only produced — and pointed into the door — after a person he did not know approached his vehicle.
Vires suggested additional bond conditions and/or an increase in bond was more appropriate. “There are a number of options,” Vires argued, in opposing revocation of bond.
State prosecutors asked Judge Fry to revoke Quarry’s bond. Judge Fry agreed, noting the “proximity of the dates of offenses” and that a convicted felon was not allowed to have a gun.
After noting Quarry has made five bonds and still obtained new charge(s), he was going to revoke the bond and continued the pending Criminal Court case, and boundover to the grand jury cases, to Sept. 17.
