Orleans/Niagara BOCES’ Allied Health program seniors were welcomed into the newly opened Lockport Memorial Hospital on Snyder Drive this week. Students are from Lockport and Newfane high schools and their visit was thanks to a cooperative educational partnership between Catholic Health Services and Orleans/Niagara BOCES.
Students will spend two mornings each week rotating through eight different departments at the hospital, with the goal of gaining a broad perspective on careers in the medical field.
The Allied Health program is a two-year program for high-achieving juniors and seniors who are intending to pursue medical careers after high school. The program offers a combination of classroom instruction in college-level anatomy and physiology, as well as shadowing experiences in local medical offices.
Orleans/Niagara BOCES offers this program in three locations to accommodate its 13 component districts. The programs are housed at Orleans Community Health Medina Memorial Hospital, which serves Orleans County schools. The program at Niagara Falls Memorial Medical Center serves western Niagara County schools. The program for Lockport, Starpoint, and Newfane high schools is housed in one of the buildings of the Medical Campus at 5854 Snyder Drive.
The Allied Health program starts for juniors in the afternoon. The students continue year two in the morning. Interested sophomores should talk to their guidance counselors for information about enrollment for junior year.
