SARANAC — The game looked daunting but the Eagles never wavered despite being swept 3-0 by Westhill in a Class B Regional Final, Saturday.
“I think that as far as our side of the court goes, I couldn’t be happier with what we did,” Beekmantown head coach Allyssa Rock said. “We limited our own errors, which going in today, was kind of the goal. If they’re gonna beat you, they can beat you.
“Same thing with all the games up into this point. And I think that, honestly, they just beat us, and that’s okay. We always tell them that if you play your best and you still lose, there’s nothing to be mad about. So I think they’re all in good spirits just knowing that they did a really good job against a really difficult team.”
The difficult team, Westhill, has won the regional crown five out of the past six seasons and gave the Eagles all they could.
The three sets went the way of the Warriors in, 25-13, 25-14, 25-15
But, Beekmantown never gave up or put their heads down.
Between each set one could hear them cheer together as they celebrated with Ernest the team’s mascot. A small Eagle often held during huddles by team captain Payton Reyonlds.
The Eagles kept their spirits high. As each set closed in on completion, players were still fighting for one more point.
“They never gave up,” Rock said. “They never got in their own head. They played the same in the last point that they did in the first point.
“And that’s really all we asked, and that was just have fun the whole match, whether it’s going our way or not. We just wanted them to have fun.”
The Eagles finish the season 18-3 and say goodbye to four seniors – Vanessa Sorrell, Payton Reynolds, Peyton Hooker and Emily Perry.
Rock was appreciative of them and made sure they knew it. She wanted her team to just know after the game the fun they’ve had together.
“We are just forever proud of them, especially like our four seniors, doing what felt like the impossible two years in a row, is what we told them,” Rock said. “I mean, they left this program in a better place, and they found it and they pulled off the impossible twice in a row and the fact that we made it this far, we got two extra games just because of all their hard work like, there’s really nothing to be upset about.
“They’re an incredible group of girls.”
