Four Hartwick College athletes and one Bainbridge resident were among the Empire 8 Conference’s Athletes of the Week for Oct. 6 to 12, according to a media release from the conference.
Ethne Degan, a Bainbridge-Guilford graduate, was named the Empire 8 women’s cross country runner for the season time this season. Degan, a sophomore, was the top Empire 8 finisher at the 2025 Houghton Highlander Invitational at Field of Dreams Park on Saturday, Oct 11, finishing sixth out of 188 runners, covering the 6,000-meter course in a time of 22:12.2 with a 5:58 mile rate.
Katelyn Klotz was named the Defensive Player of the Week in field hockey for Hartwick. A junior from South Glens Falls, Klotz made her presence felt in two conference wins from the backline, recording five goals on two goals and an assist, while holding opponents to one goal and 12 total shots. She had a goal and an assist in a 6-0 win over Russell Sage Wednesday and scored in a 5-1 victory over SUNY Brockport on Saturday.
Jenna Mierek was named Defensive Player of the Week in women’s soccer from Hartwick. A senior from Prospect, Mierek made a major impact all over the pitch on both ends for Hartwick, pouring in three assists in Wednesday’s 5-0 win over Elmira, as well as commanding the backline, helping lead the Hawks to a pair of clean sheets over the two matches, which also included a scoreless draw against Houghton.
The Hartwick Women’s Tennis team had triple honors, with singles and doubles awards.
Samantha Lantzy was the Singles Player of the Week. A sophomore from Valatie, Lantzy was pivotal in helping the Hawks clinch their fourth consecutive regular season title with a 6-1 win over the Cardinals on Saturday. She began the day with a 6-1 win at No. 2 doubles with Lily Vanuga over Fisher’s Lily Miller and Tiana Buttino, before ending the day with a statement, winning 6-4, 6-2 over Lilly Renzi at first singles. It is Lantzy’s third E8 Player of the Week honor this season.
Phoebe Olson, a senior from Jamestown, and Gianna Leggieri, a junior from Ballston Lake, were named the Doubles Players of the Week. Olson and Leggieri set the tone for the Hawks on Saturday, being the first ones off the court with a 6-1 win over Eliana Kelly and Lilly Renzi at No.1 doubles, en route to clinching their fourth consecutive regular season title.
