Great New Books
The Brightness by Chad Harbach. Lives come together, and apart, once again in fictional Westish, WI, and beyond. Pella wants Mike to apply to law school, and she’s been helping her friend Owen Dunne — also her late father’s former lover and now a bestselling novelist — prepare for his destination wedding. Her goals for her own future and relationship are less clear. Another close friend is 21-year-old Irma Friske, a “tiny, upright person” and scholarship student.
With her friends Pammy Chang and the magnetic, troubled Dahlia Breughel, Irma embarks on a “project” at Westish’s hallowed Parties resulting in two football players tattooed with a shocking phrase on their foreheads, an incident that scandalizes and energizes the Westish campus before capturing national attention.
Several explosive dramas at Owen’s wedding, both related and unrelated to this incident, further scramble the characters’ interpersonal relationships, and Pella, in the aftermath, finds herself continuing her journey of self-exploration in New York City.
The Natural Order by Matthew Aldrich. Paul Whitmore, both the world’s wealthiest and oldest living person at 122 years old, is closing in on the greatest longevity record in human history. His extraordinary lifespan is the product of a daily practice called the Method, combined with a rigidly self-imposed isolation. He plans to survive long enough to claim the record, then gift his secret to humanity. Certain powerful forces intend to keep him from releasing his secret.
When Paul’s estranged 85-year-old son Max receives a death threat, Paul pulls him inside his compound. It is an act born of love and guilt, but safety and captivity can look remarkably alike. This thriller is equal parts propulsive and thoughtful, weaving together questions of parenthood, mortality, and inequality without ever losing its grip on readers.

Stingy Schobel Says
Check your prescription drug formulary each year. If you take medications, always look at your plan’s list of covered drugs during open enrollment.
Too often, people stick with the same plan year after year without realizing their prescriptions are moving to a higher tier and ill cost much more in the coming year, missing out on a chance to switch and save.
