Great New Books
We Chase Shadows by Richard Osman. The unlikely trio that makes up a recently formed detective agency, We Solve Murders, awaits their first proper case. Steve, a retired police officer; his daredevil daughter-in-law, Amy; and over-the-top (and financial backer) Rosie are ready.
Though Steve is not especially willing, as he prefers village life, his cat, and mourning his late wife. But after Rosie touts the agency on a chat show, a dead body appears on the steps of an Italian villa, and the resident, Vern Blackwood, a petty crook, asks the trio to investigate the murder of his body guard. Even more disturbing, at least to Blackwood, is the note suggesting that there may be more attempts.
So begins a romp across continents, as bodies pile up and motives become muddied. Some readers may think they see the big picture and the solution to the mystery, but there are so many turns and so much fun, the whodunit is the least of the book’s charms.
Fallow by Sarah Anderson. Natalie, a recent college graduate, is stuck in a dead-end job and overwhelmed by student loans and the need for expensive dental work. Desperate for an infusion of cash, she goes to donate plasma at a local blood center, where she sees an advertisement for an ambiguous job with a powerful tech corporation known only as “The Company.”
After an extensive interview process, Natalie is offered a job as the first in-house corporate surrogate. In exchange for birthing seven babies in 10 years, she receives luxury housing, comprehensive health care, and financial security.
Marketed as a progressive solution for women in the workplace, there is nonetheless an undercurrent of exploitation. Natalie shows little moral conflict through the first five pregnancies, while enjoying the comforts the job provides. It is not until her sixth pregnancy that she is forced to grapple with the ethical implications of her choice.
The Thoroughbreds (Academy #2) by Elin Hildenbrand. The story opens on move-in day at a prestigious New England boarding school, where students reconnect for what will be the final year for many of them.
Previous relationships and rivalries continue, alongside the arrival of two new students: Liam, a scholarship student from New York, and Pippi, a day student who is the spoiled daughter of a reality TV star.
Head of School Audre Robinson returns after spending the summer in New Orleans where she was helping her aging parents. Having neglected her administrative duties, she is stunned to discover the school’s new accounting firm has lost $7 million. Audre is determined to resolve the crisis before informing the board president; she fears for her job while also navigating a budding romance with one of the new faculty members.

Do you want to prevent wasps and hornets from building nests on your house? Instead of reaching for chemical insecticides, fill a spray bottle with soap and water and spray the nest directly.
This simple method works because the soapy mixture clogs the insects’ breathing pores while also creating a slick surface that helps break down the nest. The residual soap can also make the area slippery enough to discourage new nests from forming in the same spot.
For best results, spray in the evening or early morning, when wasps and hornets are less active and inside the nest.
