Among the Thorns by Jennifer Lambert. At 20, Rose is a solitary and exceedingly talented oneiromancer, or someone who possesses powerful dream magic. She’s rapidly approaching the end of her schooling and the moment she’ll need to enter into a blood-bound contract with a wealthy employer.
As a seventh son, Prince Sebastien is supremely unlikely to inherit his father’s throne and is instead dispatched to Hendricks Academy for Sorcerous Pursuits to train his newly recognized ability to communicate with animals and woo Rose for his father’s court.
Meanwhile, Thorn, also 20, is held prisoner in a small cottage, the only home she’s ever known. It’s a Cinderella-like existence, devoted to using her psychometry (the power to detect an object’s history via touch) to line the pockets of her neglectful guardian, Jada, and dreaming of the fair-haired prince she once saw in a vision. Thanks to some well-timed twists of fate, the trio’s paths explosively converge, shattering their preconceived notions of each other and themselves.
The plot is just as tangled as the briars and roses imprisoning Thorn, but sweet romance weaves through even the darkest moments.
The Subtle Pleasures of Indiscretion by Alexander McCall Smith. Precious Ramotswe, head of the No. 1 Ladies’ Detective Agency, struggles to keep her one-room agency afloat, while Isabel Dalhousie is independently wealthy, lives in a spacious Victorian town house, and edits a philosophy journal.
But Precious and Isabel are both wise and share a drive to help people who come to them with problems.
In this, the 16th Isabel Dalhousie novel, there are several thorny issues: What to do about a woman’s discovery that she has a half-brother that her mother knows nothing about? What to do about a philosophy professor’s determination to out another professor for long-ago cheating? And what to do about the gorgeous orchestra manager who is trying to seduce Isabel’s husband?
Lots of comedy here, both in Isabel’s wry observations and in her over-thinking just about everything. Great on atmosphere, character, and tricky entanglements.
Cool Machine by Colson Whitehead. Ray Carney, owner of Carney’s Furniture in Harlem, is feeling the middle-age blues. His material success flourishes. His wife runs a popular travel agency. They enjoy empty-nest living on ritzy Riverside Drive.
Then the lure of his criminal past seduces him into the thrills of a perfect crime, a career capstone.
In 1981, he falls in with Uncle Richie’s scheme to do a con so big that he can retire. In 1983, his good buddy Pepper needs help with a job gone wrong, when $80,000 and a rare Ngil mask both go missing.
In 1986, Ray takes on the burden of saving his grand-nephew’s life when the boy makes an error while working for a crooked lawyer. Whitehead let loose vigorous creative energies to power this portrayal of New York City as a cruel machine with a flourishing top layer grinding down the little people below.
Ray lives in the space between, selling furniture out front but conniving through the side door.
