MANKATO — Here’s what went down in the area sports scene Friday.
High school scores
Mankato West girl’s basketball dropped its season opener in a 76-44 road loss to Northfield. Livi Downs had 10 points, six assists and six rebounds for the Scarlets. Zoe Williams added 10 points. Allison Carter had seven points, five rebounds and four steals. West hosts Mankato East at 2 p.m. Saturday.
Olivia Bungum dropped 31 points as United South Central beat Le Sueur-Henderson 61-18. USC saw Ivy O’Rourke drop 10 points and Chloe Bullerman tally nine rebounds and five blocks.
Sleepy Eye bested Waterville-Elysian-Morristown 73-69 and Blooming Prairie claimed a 75-49 win over Waseca.
In boy’s hockey Mankato West earned a 12-0 season opening win over Osseo. Stats were not available before our deadline.
Mavericks upset No. 2 Minnesota
Minnesota State women’s hockey walked into Minneapolis and claimed the game’s final three goals in a 3-1 win over No. 2 Minnesota.
Mercury Bischoff tied the game 16:08 into the first period. Ava Guillemette gave MSU a 2-1 lead with 3:20 left in the third period and Kianna Roeske buried the empty netter with 42 seconds left.
Kamryn Van Batavia added two assists. Bischoff, Sophie Stramel and Taylor Otremba each had a helper. Hailey Hansen stopped 39 shots.

No. 8 Mavericks cruise to win
A whopping 30 steals and 60 points in the paint propelled No. 8 Minnesota State women’s basketball to a 94-66 win over Colorado School of Mines.
Senior guard Natalie Bremer led the way with 15 points and two steals. Rhyan Holmgren followed with an efficient outing of her own, scoring 14 points on 5 of 7 shooting while adding five rebounds. Hannah Herzig matched her career high with eight steals, a mark she previously reached against UMary in Feb. 2025, and added eight points. Sophomore Elisabeth Gadient added 12 points and three rebounds off the bench.
The Mavericks host St. Cloud State at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday
MSU men fall to Lakers
Minnesota State men’s basketball opened weekend play in Sioux Falls with a 76-55 loss to Grand Valley State Friday.
Caden Kirkman led MSU with 16 points, recording five field goals and converting six free throws, while also collecting nine rebounds and posting two blocks. Arhman Lewis added nine points, making seven of eight free throws and securing six rebounds. David Harmon contributed with seven points and recorded two steals. Colton Benson tallied nine points, including two 3-pointers, and grabbed two rebounds.
