The Maryland Class 1A West Region I playoff brackets have been set.
Fort Hill, champion of the Western Maryland Athletic Conference, is the top seed in the boys bracket with a 17-4 regular-season record and will have a bye to the region semifinals.
Allegany (18-4) is the No. 2 seed because tournament games aren’t counted toward playoff seeding. The Sentinels are 16-3 in MPSSAA countable games while the Campers are 16-4.
Allegany hosts Clear Spring (1-20) in the region quarterfinals on Tuesday at 6 p.m.
The winner of that game will play the winner of No. 3 Southern (14-8) and No. 6 Hancock (5-16) — which will be played Tuesday at the same time — on Thursday in the region semifinals.
No. 4 Mountain Ridge (13-9) hosts No. 5 Northern (10-12) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. The Miners won both regular-season meetings, 65-47 and 49-34.
Fort Hill, the defending region champ and a 2022-23 Final Four participant, will host the winner of Mountain Ridge/Northern in the region semifinals on Thursday.
The Class 1A West Region I championship will be held on Tuesday, March 5, at the higher seed.
The state quarterfinals will take place on Friday, March 8, on the home court of the higher seed.
The state semifinals are on March 12 or 13 at a pre-determined neutral site, and the state championship is at the University of Maryland on March 15 or 16.
On the girls side, a coin flip Friday determined that Southern (19-3) is the No. 1 seed and will receive a first-round bye.
Defending region champ and 2022-23 state runner-up Mountain Ridge (19-3) — which also lost the coin flip in the state quarterfinals a season ago, sending the squad to the Eastern Shore — is seeded second and will host No. 7 Hancock (1-19) in the region quarterfinals on Wednesday.
The winner of that contest will take on the winner of No. 3 Allegany (14-7) and No. 6 Fort Hill (2-17), which is also Wednesday.
Southern will await the winner of the region quarterfinal between No. 4 Northern (13-8) and No. 5 Clear Spring (7-15) — slated for Wednesday at 6 p.m.
The girls region semifinals will be contested Friday, March 1, the championship is Wednesday, March 6, and the state quarterfinals are Saturday, March 9 — all to be played at the venue of the higher seed.
The state semifinals will be held on March 12 or 13 at a predetermined neutral site, and the state championship is being played at the University of Maryland on March 15 or 16.
The West Virginia girls section playoffs are underway.
Tucker County defeated East Hardy, 50-19, in the Class A, Region II, Section 1 championship game Thursday at Keyser High School.
In West Virginia, sectional championship participants both advance to regional co-finals, win or lose, needing a win to advance to the state tournament in Charleston.
Tucker County will host the loser of the Section 2 title between Pendleton County and Pocahontas County, which was played Friday, next week in the region co-finals. East Hardy will face the victor on the road.
Keyser (16-5) hosted Hampshire (11-11) in the Class AAA, Region I, Section 1 championship on Friday.
The winner of that game hosts the loser of North Marion (15-7) and Weir (12-11) in the Class AAA, Region I co-finals next week, while the loser of Keyser/Hampshire faces the winner of North Marion/Weir on the road — both games are for state tournament berths.
Petersburg (13-9) hosted Frankfort (4-19) in the Class AA, Region II, Section 1 championship on Friday.
The winner hosts the loser of Trinity Christian (17-5) and Braxton County (10-12) in the Class AA, Region II co-finals next week, while the loser of Petersburg/Frankfort faces the winner of Trinity/Braxton County on the road — both for a trip to Charleston.
Petersburg has advanced to the Class AA state semifinals in three straight seasons.
The West Virginia boys sectional playoffs don’t begin until next week but seeding has been announced.
Frankfort (15-6) has been awarded the No. 1 seed in Class AA, Region II, Section 1 and receives a bye to the championship game on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m.
No. 2 Petersburg (15-6) hosts No. 3 Moorefield (6-15) in the section semifinals on Tuesday at 7 p.m. for the right to face the Falcons.
Hampshire (7-14) is the top seed in Class AAA, Region I, Section 2 and has a bye to the section title game on Friday, March 1, at 7 p.m.
The Trojans await the winner of Tuesday’s section semifinal matchup between No. 2 Keyser (6-16) and No. 3 Berkeley Springs (4-16), which tips off at 7 p.m.
Tucker County (17-3) is the No. 1 seed in Class A, Region II, Section 1 and hosts No. 4 Union (9-11) in the section semifinals on Monday at 7 p.m.
No. 2 East Hardy (17-2) hosts No. 3 Paw Paw (14-8) on the other side of the bracket Monday at 7 p.m.
The winners of those games will play for the section title on Thursday at Keyser High School.
