TICONDEROGA — We Are Instrumental, the nonprofit group that helps student musicians, officially opened its music studio recently.
A crowd of around 50 people showed up June 24 to see Executive Director Evan Mack unlock the doors to the instrument-filled studio hub on the second floor of 194 Montcalm St. in downtown Ticonderoga.
“Once a student gets a working instrument, their entire world opens up to limitless potential,” Mack said. “The hub will offer instrument training to student repair captains who will learn and head back to their schools to monitor the inventories. The hub will be used for professional development for teachers to learn instrument repair.
“We have the ability to record repair videos as digital resources for students and teachers. And of course, jam sessions, masterclasses, in-person lessons and open mic events. We’ll continue expanding opportunities for students and educators throughout the region.
“Ticonderoga has always been a community that values education, the arts and supporting young people. We’re proud to be part of that positive momentum, and we look forward to continuing to grow our programs and partnerships here to better serve schools across the Adirondacks.”
Mack, a professor at Skidmore College who lives in Ticonderoga, is a composer and songwriter.
We Are Instrumental works to improve accessibility to musical education for children throughout the region by providing quality instruments, enrichment opportunities and educational support for students, music teachers and programs.
The group’s music summit brings in 25 world-class musicians to work with around 400 students from multiple schools.
The opening event was sponsored by the Ticonderoga Area Chamber of Commerce, Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership and Town of Ticonderoga.
“We appreciate We Are Instrumental’s work,” Ticonderoga Town Supervisor James O’Bryan said. “I know the thrill of picking up an instrument for the first time and holding it in your hands. Music will always be a part of you, so enjoy it.
“We Are Instrumental is a shining example of what we can accomplish.”
Since 2020, We Are Instrumental has supplied more than 750 instruments in 30 schools and given 1,000 virtual lessons a year to 36 students.
Ticonderoga Montcalm Street Partnership Secretary Debbie Barber said We Are Instrumental gives music students the tools they need.
“We Are Instrumental has had a remarkable impact on northern New York,” she said. “It enhances not only our schools, but the entire community. We celebrate the partnership every child deserves.”
TACC President and CEO Matthew Courtright said he’s happy We Are Instrumental finally has a headquarters.
“We are excited,” he said. “Stop in and learn more about We Are Instrumental.”
State Assemblymember Matt Simpson (R,C-Adirondack) was at the opening to offer his support.
“It’s a great day for Ticonderoga,” he said.
