NEWBURYPORT — Around 30 local businesses will be participating in the annual Love Local event to support Runway for Recovery, the Newburyport-based nonprofit working to redefine the breast cancer experience for families by providing a full a continuum of support.
The event takes place event on May 9, from 3:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Inn Street.
Love Local raises critical funds for those who are currently fighting breast cancer, their families, and loved ones of those who have passed. Grants funded by the event are used for childcare, extracurricular activities, grocery cards, school supplies, summer camp, therapy bills, and more.
Last year’s Love Local drew a local audience of 250 guests and raised nearly $25,000. This year, the organization has a fundraising goal of $30,000. Since the organization’s founding in 2007, R4R’s calendar of events have raised more than $3.4 million to help families all over New England and more recently, Los Angeles and Orange County, Calif.
Love Local will feature two local speakers who will talk about the impact that breast cancer has had on their lives. Alivia Collette will speak about what it was like to watch her mother go through treatment when she was an elementary-aged child. Amy Burke will offer remarks about her recent diagnosis, discovering the cancer herself, and the power of community that has encircled her during her treatment.
In addition to these speakers, the afternoon and evening will offer opportunities for guests to shop at local boutiques/businesses that are giving a percent of proceeds to Runway to Recovery to sip wine and snack on tasty treats right on Inn Street, to make Mother’s Day presents and much more.
An event within the event, Love for Mom, is aimed at younger kiddos and will occur from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m.
Love Local, Newburyport depends on the generosity of guests to purchase tickets, businesses will donate a percentage of sales back, and philanthropically minded sponsors to help off-set the cost of the event.
