It’s time again to think about poinsettias. The Fairfield Glade Garden Club will be selling these beautiful plants this year in conjunction with Cumberland County High School. The students at the high school grow 1,600 poinsettias each year under the guidance of teacher Danny Wilson.
They have added a twist to the growing process this year. Junior Ayden MaHaney, this year’s state AgriScience Fair winner, is serenading the plants with both classical and country music in an experiment to see if music helps plants grow. He has a test table and periodically measures the plants on the test table to those on the other tables. Results of his experiment will be announced in December.
The poinsettias will be on sale at the CCHS greenhouse on Monday and Tuesday, Dec. 4 and 5, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and at the Village Green Mall on Thursday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. There will also be a holiday bake sale on Thursday at the mall. The plants will be $8 this year. Please remember to bring your own containers for transporting your plants home.
The proceeds from the poinsettia sale benefit both the CCHS greenhouse maintenance and the FG Garden Club’s Helena Schmidt Scholarship Fund. The fund gives scholarships to students graduating from area high schools who are going into a field involving the Food Web. The proceeds from the bake sale will benefit the Helena Schmidt Scholarship Fund.
