North Andover — The Merrimack College women’s hockey team tied the score in the final five minutes, then Avery Anderson scored the overtime goal to pull off the 2-1 upset win over the No. 5-ranked UConn Huskies on Friday afternoon at Lawler Arena.
It was the second top-10 victory of the season for Merrimack, which also defeated No. 7 Clarkson.
After getting 25 saves in the first two periods from Adreanna Doucette, Lauren Lyons entered the game for the third period and overtime, making 11 saves of her own.
With the net solidified, Merrimack tied the game in the final five minutes, when Emma Pfeffer scored in her fourth consecutive game off an assist from Kerttu Lehmus. Stina Sanberg also picked up a helper on the Pfeffer goal.
In the overtime period, Anderson took the puck into her own zone before putting the shot in far side to get the victory.
Warrior men fall to Minutemen
Tied 2-2 after two periods, Merrimack College men’s hockey allowed two unanswered third period goals to fall to UMass Amherst 4-2 on Friday. The loss snapped a five-game winning streak for Merrimack.
Caelan Fitzpatrick and Trevor Hoskin each scored a goal for the Warriors, who fell to 10-11-0 on the season.
