AMESBURY — Firefighters responded to Goodwin Creek Marina about noon Wednesday upon hearing a motorboat moored there was ablaze. By the time firefighters knocked down the fire, flames had spread to the dock, causing some damage.
“Nobody was injured, but we did lose a pet,” Deputy Fire Chief Rob Serino said.
Serino said the scene could not have been handled with mutual aid, sharing that Salisbury and Newburyport assisted with the primary response, with Newbury and Newton, New Hampshire later joining the scene.
“Then in town, Merrimac ambulance and Seabrook ambulance both had medicals that they transported on with the help of Exeter and South Hampton (New Hampshire) on those calls, and then West Newbury and Rowley covered the station for us while we had all of these responses going on,” Serino said.
The boat was completely lost according to Serino, with the fire knocked down in about 30 minutes.
Fire Chief Jim Nolan said this incident highlights the need to have a boat in the community with firefighting capabilities.
“If this had been during peak boat season, we probably would have lost a few more boats,” Nolan said.
He said the fire is being investigated by his department, Amesbury police officers and Massachusetts Environmental Police.
