Members of the Cumberland Plateau Amateur Radio Club will participate in the National Field Day this weekend.
The annual American Radio Relay League exercise will be from 1 p.m. Saturday, June 22-noon Sunday, June 23 in the field adjacent to the Homestead Elementary School at the intersection of Hwys. 127 S. and 68.
Field Day is the largest all-volunteer communications exercise in the world. The event showcases how amateur radio works reliably under any conditions, from almost any location, to create a communications network independent of internet, or cell phone infrastructure.
Cumberland Plateau Amateur Radio Club ham operators will use traditional voice and Morse code as well as state-of-the art digital modes of communication.
This year’s event includes a demonstration of solar generators and batteries that can be used to power the radio stations during times when commercial power is not available. The demonstration will run from 1-3 p.m. Saturday.
Anyone may become a licensed amateur radio operator regardless of age. Ham radio operators in the United States are as young as 9 and as old as 100.
Cumberland Plateau Amateur Radio Club welcomes those interested and the general public to to attend Field Day to see what ham radio operation is all about.
