FROSTBURG — Allegany defeated Southern, 58-30, Saturday to capture the 25th Annual Eddie Rogers Jr. Memorial Junior Varsity Basketball Tournament championship at Mountain Ridge High School.
Dylan Hare, who was named tournament Most Valuable Player, scored 17 points in the title game, and Dylan Irons added 14.
The duo were named to the all-tournament team along with Fort Hill’s Nazir Briggs, Mountain Ridge’s Jasper Crissman, and Southern’s Landon Whitehair and Alijah Sheppard
Fort Hill beat Mountain Ridge, 44-34, in the consolation contest. Briggs tallied 16 points, and the Miners’ Sawyer Ellliot scored nine.
In the semifinals, Allegany downed Mountain Ridge, 56-49. Hare garnered 21 points, and Irons added 15. Sam Patterson topped the Miners with 12 points, and Crissman scored 10.
Southern edged Fort Hill, 46-44, in the other semifinal behind 12 points from Whitehair. EJ Scott and Marquis Trimble led the way for the Sentinels with 16 and 12 points, respectively.
Rogers was a JV basketball player at Westmar, when a train derailed in Bloomington, taking his life on Jan. 30, 2000.
The tournament serves as the only fundraiser for a scholarship in his name.
To date, over $30,000 has been awarded to Westmar and Mtn. Ridge graduates.
