CUMBERLAND — Allegany opened the playoffs with a dominant 72-12 victory over Hancock on Friday.
“I thought our kids went out and did what they needed to tonight,” Allegany head coach Jim O’Neal said. “Our goal in the playoffs is just win and advance, and that’s what happened tonight.”
The No. 2 seeded Campers (20-3) scored the game’s first 20 points and led 20-3 after the first quarter before taking a 46-3 halftime lead and 58-3 after three quarters.
Alco shot 18 of 33 (55%) from the field while the seventh-seeded Panthers (1-18) shot 1 of 15 (6%).
Hancock’s only score of the first half came on a three-pointer from Brooke Parker with two minutes left in the first quarter.
“We don’t worry about that, all of our kids play one to nine,” O’Neal said of playing time after the game got out of hand. “Tonight, we were able to have even minutes out there, subbing in throughout the game. We don’t worry about starter or backup who’s playing. We just put them out there and let them play.”
Parker hit two 3-pointers for the Panthers in the fourth quarter and Brooklyn McCusker added a triple in the fourth to conclude Hancock’s scoring.
Avery Miller led the Campers with 18 points, followed by Braylin Bosley and Julia Imes with nine apiece.
Allegany hosts the winner of No. 3 Northern (15-8), a 48-33 winner over No. 6 Clear Spring (8-15), in the region semifinals on Monday.
“We concentrate on little things within the game,” O’Neal said of what the team gets out of a lopsided game. “Passing within our offense, spacing within our offense. Since we’re not pressuring on defense, we’re trying to stay back inside that 3-point line, making sure we’re communicating who has the ball, who has the high post, who has the wing “
