CUMBERLAND — Allegany rode its pitching and defense to a bounce-back, 8-1 victory over previously unbeaten Southern on Wednesday evening.
The Campers (2-1) were shutout in a 2-0 defeat to Keyser on Tuesday, but they took advantage of early walks to plate three runs in the first inning and two in the third to jump out to a 5-1 lead over the Rams on Wednesday.
Allegany entered the fifth inning with just two base hits when its bats came to life with two outs. Josef Sneathen, Eli Imes and Caedon Wallace all had RBI singles in the frame.
Caden Long doubled and drove in a pair, and Kane Williams also struck a two-bagger.
Myles Bascelli gave Allegany a solid start on the mound, allowing one run on two hits with four strikeouts in 2 1/2 innings of work, though he didn’t go far enough into the game to get the win.
Long, a Frostburg State signee, was tabbed with the victory after tossing 3 1/3 shutout innings in relief. The right-hander allowed two base hits and fanned four.
Landyn Ansel logged the final 1 1/3 innings of scoreless baseball for the Campers.
Junior right-hander Matthew McCartney took the loss for Southern. Bryson Bennett threw a solid game in long relief, allowing five runs (two earned) on six hits with two strikeouts and five walks in 4 1/3 innings.
Reece Tasker threw 1 1/3 scoreless for the Rams after Bennett.
Tasker tallied Southern’s lone RBI in the third inning and junior Ben Lohr doubled.
Allegany has a doubleheader against a pair of squads from the Eastern Panhandle of West Virginia on Friday, taking on Martinsburg at 12:30 p.m. and Musselman at 2:30 at the Hot Stove Complex.
Southern hosts Frankfort (1-2) on Friday at 4:30 p.m.
Moorefield 5, Petersburg 3
PETERSBURG, W.Va. — Six different Yellow Jackets recorded a hit in Moorefield’s win over Petersburg on Wednesday.
Alexander Miller singled to center, driving in two runs in the top of the third for the Jackets (2-1).
Trevor Baldwin earned an RBI on a sacrifice fly.
An error at second base brought in the third run of the inning.
Moorefield added a run in the second and fourth innings.
The Vikings (1-3) scored one run in the fourth on an error.
A Peyton Tingler RBI single drove in a run in the fifth, followed by a groundout by Colin Mauzy.
Gary Weese earned the win in 4 2/3 innings for Moorefield, allowing three hits, one earned run and two walks with a strikeout.
Tyson Arnold went two shutout innings with no hits or walks and five punchouts.
Caden Arbaugh went 5 2/3 innings out of the bullpen, allowing five hits, three earned runs and no walks with eight strikeouts for Petersburg.
The Yellow Jackets head to Berkeley Springs on Thursday at 5 p.m.
The Vikings host PikeView on Friday at 2 p.m.
