CUMBERLAND — Allegany County Public Schools will present its All-County Jazz Festival concert at 7 p.m. Dec. 3 in the Allegany High School auditorium. The free public concert will feature 34 student musicians selected through competitive auditions.
Retired school system band teachers Tom Harrison, a jazz pianist and lecturer in Frostburg State University’s music department, and Jim Roderick, a jazz guitarist, conducted auditions for middle and high school students. Seventeen middle school musicians were selected for the Junior Jazz Band (grades 7-9), and 17 high school students were chosen for the Senior Jazz Band (grades 10-12).
Selected musicians will participate in a two-day jazz festival Dec. 2-3, working with guest conductors in intensive rehearsals before the evening performance.
Andrew Mitroff, a retired band teacher from Baltimore County, will conduct the Junior Jazz Band. Brent Weber, chair of FSU’s music department and accomplished jazz saxophonist, will lead the Senior Jazz Band.
