The Agganis All-Star Games are played in memory of legendary Lynn athlete Harry Agganis, an All-American quarterback at Lynn Classical and Boston University. He was expected to be the first-round draft pick of the Cleveland Browns, but he opted for a professional baseball career and was the starting first baseman for the Boston Red Sox when he died of a pulmonary embolism in 1955 at the age of 26.
The Agganis Foundation was formed shortly thereafter with a mission of awarding college scholarships in Agganis’ name. Since 1955, the Foundation has awarded almost $2.6 million in scholarships to 1,074 student-athletes. The Agganis All-Star Games serve as a fundraiser for the scholarship program.
And the games will once again include local athletes.
In football, recently-graduated Pentucket senior Aaron Ketschke will be a member of the North Team. The wide receiver was named a Daily News All Star this fall after hauling in 47 passes for 898 yards and 11 touchdowns.
Moving over to lacrosse, there’s potentially a great local story brewing between the two girls’ teams. A pair of longtime Pentucket teammates will be going against each other, with Kate Conover playing for the North All-Stars while Ella Palmer is on Team South. Both scholarship athletes, Palmer (U of Tampa) scored 85 goals with 21 assists this spring, while Conover (Saint Anselm) had 55 goals with 43 assists in helping the Panthers reach the Division 4 quarterfinals. Then in the boys’ game, recently-graduated Amesbury senior Max White (45g, 14a this spring) will play for a North All-Star squad coached by Triton head man Wayne Silva.
Then finally, Pentucket has another athlete involved with Brayden Jennings playing for Team North in the boys soccer game. The two-time Daily News All-Star and two-time team captain scored 5 goals with 1 assist for the Panthers this past fall.
