TRAVERSE CITY — There are only 39 high school players national who make the National Fastpitch Coaches Association’s All-America team.
Three are from Traverse City.
Traverse City Central senior pitcher Piper Cavanaugh made the second team, while teammate Grace Cary and Traverse City West shortstop Delaney Witkop here both third team picks.
Each of the three teams has just 13 players.
Cavanaugh, an Oregon commit, hit .585 with a 1.750 OPS, 20 doubles, nine triples, nine home runs, 57 RBI, 61 runs and 18 steals in 38 games. As a pitcher, she was 21-1, allowing only 32 hits and six walks in 127 innings while striking out 289.
She had more strikeouts looking (61) than combined hits and walks against (38). Her earned-run average was 0.441 and she boasted a WHIP of 0.299 and opposing batting average of .076.
Cary, an Ohio State commit, led the Trojans in hitting (.638), OPS (2.001), doubles (23), triples (eight), runs (67), hit by pitch (14) and walks (27), drove in 36 runs from the leadoff spot and hit nine home runs, tied for second with Cavanaugh on the team behind Julia Brady (11).
Witkop, a Cleary University commit, batted .585 this season with 22 doubles (a TC West single-season record), four triples, five home runs, 25 RBI, 51 runs and 12 steals. She’s also the Titans’ career record-holder in hits (180), doubles (58), runs (157) and total bases (318).
