LAWRENCE — Two women were seriously injured Sunday morning in an Interstate 495 crash that shut down the southbound of the highway.
A Medlight helicopter landed on the highway to take one of the women to a Boston hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries, state police said.
The other woman hurt was taken to a local hospital for treatment of serious injuries, troopers said.
Traffic was diverted from the southbound side of highway onto Route 114.
The accident remains under investigation by state police. Lawrence firefighters and police also responded.
The names of the injured women were not released Monday.
Five people were hurt in another crash in Lawrence on Saturday night.
Firefighters used the Jaws of Life extrication tool to release a door after a crash in the 600 block of Haverhill Street.
Two people were taken by ambulance to the hospital for minor injuries after the two-car crash. Three others went to the hospital on their own, according to police.
