At the 127 Senior Center, the fun starts early at 8 a.m. Fridays when the doors open, the coffee is brewed, and members gather to catch up with old friends and meet new ones, and maybe play a game or two of dominoes.
Membership of the 127 Senior Center is open to all in the community ages 50 or older. Bingo starts at 9:30, and the members wish to thank Bilbrey Funeral Home for sponsoring bingo at the last meeting.
President Arlene Simmons then presides over a short business meeting afterward to let the members know of upcoming events and community announcements. She then opens the floor to any members for announcements or jokes. Member Leonard Hollender can always be counted on to share a very funny joke.
Once the meeting wraps up, there is musical entertainment or a community speaker who shares helpful information for seniors. The center is always on the lookout for speakers or musicians who want to share with the members and offers a free lunch to show their gratitude.
If you know of anyone who would like to speak or entertain at the center, email Vice President Chuck Elgin at elginchuck56@gmail.com.
Billy Gibson sang many old favorite tunes for the members at the last meeting.
Each week, volunteers prepare a meal which the members can purchase for $5.
The members thanked Shawn Denton, nephew of recently deceased member Nancy Martin, for providing the center with many lunches. Nancy was a beloved member at the center. She always had a big smile for everyone, loved playing bingo, and loved helping others.
She was so proud of Shawn and his wife for fixing many meals for the seniors and for all the ways they helped her every day.
Nancy will be missed by everyone who knew her.
If you enjoy relaxing and listening to some great live music, head over to the center from 6-8 p.m. Thursdays. You will get to hear some very talented musicians, including member Gene Brown.
No membership is required to attend and enjoy the music. It’s so good, you might just find yourself dancing!
Call the 127 Senior Center at 931-484-2547 for more information on becoming a member.
The center is also available to rent for groups who need a meeting place.
