At the last meeting of the 127 Seniors, the only remnant to be seen of the recent snowstorm was that the scheduled speaker was not able to travel to the center due to icy conditions on the roads into town. Other than that, it was business as usual except for some extra smiles and hugs, as the members greeted each other after being snowbound for the previous two weeks! The speaker is rescheduled for later in February and will be sharing information about support for veterans. There are many veterans at the 127 Senior Center, so the members are looking forward to hearing from her. Meanwhile, with no speaker, the members enjoyed playing Bingo, catching up, and sharing lunch together.
During the meeting, Leonard Hollender told a very funny joke. Leonard always has a great joke ready for the members. This week was no exception, and he got a big laugh from the crowd. Next, Betty Bowman announced the Volunteer of the Month for January. Tom Simmons won the honor and received a gift card for Sonic. All kitchen volunteers are entered for a drawing at the end of each month. The 127 Senior Center is run by volunteers, and they are appreciated!
There was some sad news shared at the meeting, as long-time members Gladys Butler and Ralph England passed away recently. Gladys Butler was a teacher here in Crossville for many years and was known and loved by all her students and their families. Ralph England was also known and admired by all who knew him, and was very active in the Crossville community, including as entertainment director for the Cumberland County Fair Association for many decades. Gladys and Ralph will be missed.
Upcoming events at the 127 Senior Center include a Valentine’s Day celebration on Feb. 9 with special music by Blind Date. Movie Day will be Monday, Feb. 12 at 2 p.m. with a fun romantic comedy. Game Day will return Tuesday, March 12, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. There are line dancing classes every Friday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. with the first hour for beginners and the second hour for intermediate dancers.
The 127 Seniors always welcome new members 50 years of age or older. The regular meetings are on Fridays, with the doors opening at 8 for coffee and fellowship, games, or just chatting and catching up with old friends and making new ones. Bingo is from 9:30 to 10:30, and then there is a short meeting so the members can find out about all the events coming up. After the meeting, there is musical entertainment or a speaker who shares helpful information for local seniors. Lunch is next, which members can purchase for $5.
The center also hosts Gene Brown and friends for live music. There are many talented musicians in the group, and if you enjoy listening or dancing to live music, you are invited to come out to the 127 Senior Center every Thursday evening, from 6 to 8 p.m. Membership at the center is not required for movie day, game day, line dancing, or live music.
The 127 Senior Center also is available for rent, if you have a group that needs a meeting place. Call the center at 931-484-2547 for more information on any of the activities, and they can also be found on Facebook.
