Two guilty pleas — one resulting in a 10-year prison sentence for a Roane County man— were entered during a calling of a short Criminal Court docket last week.
Bradley Curtis Bates, 38, Webster Road or Creek Stone Lane, Harriman, pleaded guilty by information to a single count of possession of cocaine with intent to sell and received a 10-year sentence as a Range I offender.
Fine and court costs were waived, and Bates is credited for 32 days in jail since his July 11 arrest.
According to arrest affidavits filed by Cumberland County Sheriff’s Deputy Blake Richardson, a traffic stop was conducted on a 2018 Kia Forte after the vehicle crossed the fog line several times on I-40.
As Richardson approached the vehicle, he noticed the passenger “attempting to conceal a pipe with residue in his groin area.” He had the man identified as Bates to exit the vehicle and then saw a “rock-like substance believed to be cocaine.”
The resulting search of the vehicle yielded a 9-mm handgun and safety search of Bates another bag of what is believed to be “heroin/fentanyl” was found.
A criminal history check reported Bates was a convicted felon.
Bates was charged with possession of cocaine with intent, possession of heroin/fentanyl with intent, possession of a handgun by a felon, possession of a firearm while in commission of a dangerous felony, tampering with evidence and theft of property.
The handgun seized had been reported stolen in Nashville and was found underneath a rear seat. Bates denied any knowledge of the weapon at the time of his arrest.
All charges were dropped with the guilty plea to the possession charge.
