In honor of Veterans’ Day, the Niagara History Center is presenting a school holiday program for children ages 7 through 11 on Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
Participants will learn about what it was like for soldiers during World War I, particularly living in the trenches. Upon arrival, “soldiers” will make a dog tag and will be briefly introduced to the causes of the war.
During the program, they will make a periscope, decipher “slang” words and phrases associated with the war, view and handle original WWI artifacts, find out about the “Christmas Truce” of 1914, hear the story of how poppy flower became the symbol of remembrance, as well as other topics and activities. Rations will be provided at noon.
The program fee is $15 per child and pre-registration is required by Monday. Registration can be made by calling the Niagara History Center at 716-434-7433 or emailing to info@niagarahistory.org. When registering, please provide parent and child name, child’s age and a phone and email contact. Payment can be made in advance or on the day of the program. The History Center is located at 215 Niagara St. in Lockport.
Supplies and other materials for this program are funded through a grant from Cornerstone Community Federal Credit Union.
