Slayton Settlement Road in Gasport is receiving the finishing touches on a road resurfacing project that relieves drivers of miles of potholes.
Garret A. Meal, Niagara County highway commissioner, said that the county performed a short-term resurfacing of both lanes of Slayton Settlement Road’s east end, rather than performing numerous spot repairs throughout. The west end of the road had been repaved two years ago.
“We have a full repair coming in the next year or two, Meal said of the east end. “Because of the deteriorating road, we wanted to get a cap on it to prevent further degradation.”
The entire north lane was completed this summer, with a portion of the south lane and road striping now being completed.
“We have money for the complete restoration in process,” Meal said. “We requested that money and the county legislature is working on it.”
Meal said that project would include drainage improvements for Slayton Settlement, including removal of old steel pipe.
“That road went south in a hurry,” Meal said. “The older the road gets, it gets to a critical point where it starts going bad quicker. That road was used as a shortcut for truck traffic coming off of 77. That really put a hurting on it. We definitely try to build our roads to handle the farm traffic. We had to grind out some of the asphalt before putting a cap on it. We’ll have that in good shape in no time.”
