Great New Books
Road Trip by Mary Kay Andrews. Sisters Maeve and Therese Dunigan navigate their mother’s death, estate, and family legacy. The estranged sisters’ adventure begins when they decide to investigate the provenance of a family portrait that may be worth millions, in an effort to clear up debts their mother accrued when she supported a televangelist and his church in her later years.
The family’s history is interwoven with the contemporary narrative of their road trip, nudging this novel closer toward historical fiction than the author’s previous works. At the heart of the family history is a murder that echoes into the present, complete with conniving relatives who want to keep the secrets of the past buried.
As Maeve and Therese get closer to the truth and each other, they discover new personal confidence, a little bit of romance, and a new understanding of their future.
A Pair of Aces by Marie Benedict and Victoria Christopher Murray. This collaboration dramatizes the 1930s and the lives of Manhattan madam Polly Adler and attorney Eunice Carter, then the only woman and possibly the only Black person in the New York U.S. Attorney’s office.
Eunice and Polly meet in the station house, where Polly is being held after being arrested for pandering. Eunice, a member of the special prosecutor’s team on organized crime, has been assigned to question her regarding mob connections in sex work.
As the interrogation proceeds, the women slowly gain each other’s trust and realize their shared goal: building a case against mob boss Lucky Luciano and sending him to prison. Despite great risk to themselves and threats to Eunice’s family and Polly’s “ladies,” the two women prove themselves to be two aces in a suspenseful and deadly game.
Whistler by Ann Patchett. Jonathan insists that an older man is following Daphne as they make their way through the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Not that Jonathan is exactly young; he’s a 70-year-old retired hospital administrator. At 53, Daphne is teaching English at a private girls’ school.
The man who was thunderstruck by Daphne is Eddie, a 76-year-old much-adored book editor and Daphne’s first stepfather. They haven’t seen each other since she was a child. Their long-banked familial love instantly rekindles, promising intriguing flashbacks.
As Eddie and Daphne reconnect, stories are revealed of Daphne’s parents; the brief marriage between her mother, a book publicist, and Eddie; Daphne’s clinical-psychologist sister, Leda; their second stepfather, a once best-selling self-help author who fails to follow his own advice; and what led to Eddie’s banishment. As for the title, Whistler is a heroic horse in a tale of miraculous rescue Eddie told 9-year-old Daphne when they were in danger. Salvation in various modes propels this novel rich in hilarious and poignant dialogue, cascading realizations, and profound and surprising moments of kindness, forgiveness, and love.
