SOFTBALL
Marblehead 9, Ipswich 2: Tessa Francis recorded her 700th career strikeout, finishing with 18 on the day and surrendering just three hits as the Magicians picked up their 10th win of the spring. Francis also went 2-for-2 with an RBI. Tessa Andriano paced the offense with three hits and three RBI.
Salem 9, Swampscott 7: Mia Silva went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three stolen bases to lead the Witches to victory. Emma Brenna added two hits, including a huge double, and knocked in a pair of runs for Salem (now 3-9). Additionally, Julia Gauthier blasted a home run, scored twice and knocked in a pair while Liv Loux had a hit and scored twice. Ivy Meehan played great in the field for Salem, with Annie Thornett getting the win in relief of Shaylee Paige (6 Ks in 3 IP).
Beverly 5, Westford Academy 2: Lidia Miedema did it with her bat (3-for-3 with a double and 3 RBI) and on the mound (W, 5H, 6K) for the 7-7 Panthers. Keira MacNutt went 3-for-4 with a 2-run double in the fourth inning while making seven catches in right field.
Lowell Catholic 10, Danvers 9: The Falcons fell in a high scoring affair despite three hits (including a double) from Kyla Moroney. Getting two hits apiece were Addi McCarty (incuding a triple, plus a stolen base), Lila Flynn (plus a stolen base) and Maddy Fuller.
Essex Tech 11, Lynnfield 7: Ella Gasinowski pitched up the win on the hill for the Hawks, who broke the game open by scoring seven times with two outs in the fourth inning. Pacing the offense in that decisive fourth inning were Mya Jagodynski (RBI triple), Eve Sexton (2-run HR) and Adriana Lassus (HR).
Hamilton-Wenham 8, Saugus 3: Viola Fazio was 3-for-4 with two RBI while Lydia Reulet (2 SBs), Bianca Frederickson, Lilly Guittarr, Cassie Aeto and Lali Sarvendram each collected two hits to power the Generals to victory. The locals also turned a double play defensively behind winning pitcher Molly Bransford, who gave up just two earned runs over seven innings with no walks and four strikeouts.
Portsmouth Abbey 7, Pingree 6: Charlotte Loughman went 2-for-3 with a double for the Highlanders while Molly Degnan also had two hits and Antonelli Najim had a strong pitching outing and helped her own cause with three RBI.
St. Mary’s Lynn 6, Bishop Fenwick 3: Grace Moon had a pair of hits and an RBI and Sophia Cooke also knocked in a run as the Crusaders (4-11) tied it 3-3 in the sixth before the Spartans responded to retake the lead.
Newburyport 12, Masconomet 6: Angie Vecchio went 3-for-4 with two RBI and Ally Kelter hit three doubles but the Chieftains (7-6) dropped a slug fest on the road. Masconomet had a 6-3 lead but the Clippers batted around and scored nine in the fifth to seize victory.
GIRLS LACROSSE
Hamilton-Wenham 25, Lynnfield 17: Junior Jane Boardman scored seven times, including 100th of her career, while captain Evie Bernard had eight goals, an assist and 16 draw controls as the Generals (now 10-1) won a wild scoring contest on Senior Night. Captain Grace Glidden added three goals, five assists and six draw controls for the winners, with additional goals coming from Caroline Ciriello (3G, 1A), Bailey Shepherd (G, 3A), Maddie Graber (G, A), Cayla Maihos (G, A) and Samantha Nevins (G). Margot Bryce Morris, Hailey Ireland, and Molly Ryan played well defensively in front of goalies Rowan Sheckells (8 saves) and Hazel McWilliams (1 save).
Marblehead 17, Peabody 9: Coming to play for the full 48 minutes on Senior Night, the Magicians honored 12th graders Chloe Rowland (2 GBs), Avery Wysor (1 assist, 1 GB), Avery Barbeau, Anna Rausch, and Sofi Kannengeisser with a convincing win. Sophomore Zoe Dwyer scored nine times, Sammy Walker had three goals and one assist, Addie Co-Peeps nabbed two goals and two assists, Emma Ryan added two goals, and Maggie Svencer had one of each. Gwen Potter also picked up an assist and goalkeeper Molly Bullard made nine saves.
Goalkeeper Eleni Spack made 11 saves for Peabody, including her 100th this season. Leah Bresnahan had five goals for the Tanners to power the offense with Victoria Vaz (2 assists) and Arianna Alvarado adding two goals each.
Beverly 18, Danvers 2: Gwen Jones scored four times while Sasha Miller had three tallies and four assists as the Panthers (13-1) continued to dominate their foes. Senior Sophie Katz added the first two goals of her career on Senior Night, while Madeleine Reynolds and Megan McCormack splitting the contest in net.
Sienna Goldberg scored once for Danvers and assisted on teammate Dee Figueiredo’s tally as well.
Swampscott 16, Salem 3: Reagan Pelletier and Cecilia Tripp (assist) each had three goals and were two of 10 goal scorers for the Big Blue in their runaway win. Bridget Maloney and Victoria Pierro had two goals each; Quinn Kelleher and Fiona Keaney each had a goal and two assists; Lauren Burse, Olivia Bouffard, Nola Conley and Lila Cilley had single goals; and Lia Beatrice and Bridget Urbano both had one assist while goalie Lilah Caplan made six saves for Swampscott (now 10-2).
Nobles 10, Pingree 3: The Highlanders (11-2) suffered just their second loss of the season despite goals from Caitlin Cunningham (3 GBs), Ellie Bracken and Isla Cleveland. Murphy Holden turned aside 17 shots in net and also caused a pair of turnovers.
Bishop Fenwick 12, Masconomet 7: Mia Marques led the Chieftains with two goals and two assists, with Kayleigh LeColst adding a pair of tallies and one assist while Shay Theriault also had two goals. Violet Malinowski also found the back of the net, and goalie Sophia Carson stopped seven shots.
BOYS LACROSSE
Marblehead 13, Peabody 3: Tyler Forbes and captain Owen Dulac each had two goals and three assists while teammate Kyle Thibodeau had two of each for the Magicians (now 11-3). Will Kinahan, Landon Dosch, Reid Wysor and Henry Wolcott all had one goal and one assist for Marblehead, which also got single scores from Bailey Finkle, Dylan Creiger (the first of his career) and captain Grady Becker. Another captain, goalie Colin Maniaci, made two saves before being replaced by Grady Coyne (also with 2 saves).
Ben Wager was busy in net for the Tanners (2-12), making 18 total saves. Freshman Logan Bryte had all three goals for his team. Freshman defender Stylz Bonaventure earning his first career point on an assist while also scooping a team-high six ground balls. Chris Brown also picking up a helper.
Pingree 15, Austin Prep 2: Jake Hiltz had a team-best three goals as the Highlanders rolled over the Cougars. Connor Rozkowski (2G/2A), Massimo DeSantis (2G/1A), Matt Tersolo (2G), Christian Renaud (2G) and Nick Donovan (2G) each added multiple goals, with Colin Driscoll adding one goal and three assists. Connor O’Neil had one of each, Henry Card picked up an assist, Finley McClintock won all but one of the 21 faceoffs he took, and goalie Marcello Amodeo made six saves.
Hamilton-Wenham 15, Lynnfield 11: Junior middie Billy Brown scored five times with two assists and goalie Joe Hughes made eight saves, allowing the Generals to improve to 10-3. Reid Faldi (3G, 3A), Zac Sachsel (3G, 2A), Leo Tratnyek (2G), Will Kirkman and Anthony Folger also had goals for H-W.
Swampscott 16, Salem 2: Junior John von Barta, who missed all of his junior season with an injury, hit 100 career points for the Big Blue by scoring two goals and adding three assists in the victory. Teammates Jason Rothwell (3G, 2A), Emerson Joy (3G, A), Tyler Ostroff (2G, A), Ollie Braham (2G), Bennett Tierney (G, A) Will Rowe and Johnny Marino all had goals for Swampscott (8-8) as did Luke Michigan, who won 18 faceoffs. Colton Alex stopped four saves to earn the victory in net.
Junior captain Vincent Milano had 15 saves in the net for the Witches. AJ Alessi and Aaron Cook had the goals for Salem (3-12), with Jake Lister and Fionn Coughlin earning the assists.
BASEBALL
Hamilton-Wenham 6, Danvers 5: Senior Owen Waddell came on for the final out and got a K after Danvers’ Jason Walters hit a solo homer in the bottom of the seventh in a dramatic one under the lights. Ryan Fazio drove in two runs, Griffin Hawkins scored twice and Caden Schrock had two hits as H-W (14-0) led 6-1 after three. Ollie Blatz also pitched well in relief.
Chase Richmond threw four innings of no-hit, scoreless relief to give Danvers (7-7) a chance to chip away. Dylan Weeks and Jack Curucu had two hits each in addition to Walters’ solo blast.
Beverly 10, Salem 6: Charlie Salerno (2-for-4, triple, 3 RBI) tied the game with an RBI single in the fourth and the Panthers (6-8) played seven in the last two frames to full away. Jon Reyes also tripled for Beverly, Danny Pierce had a hit, an RBI and scored and Albert Polanco earned the win with two scoreless in the middle innings.
For the Witches (0-14), Sandy Arendall had an RBI double and eighth grader Benji Muncey had two hits and two RBI in his varsity debut.
Swampscott 6, Marblehead 0: Senior righty Chase Groothuis was dominant for the Big Blue (11-3), striking out 13 in six no-hit, shutout innings. Marblehead (8-8) did get a hit in the seventh while Connor Chiarello scored twice, Michael Collins and Luc Tardiff had two hits each and senior Jami Ford had a bases clearing double in the seventh to add valuable pad runs.
Madden Lyons pitched well for the Magicians, fanning seven and allowing just one earned in six frames.
Pingree 6, Landmark 2: Aiden Perez picked up the win with five strikeouts over three innings and Aidan Horgan went 2-for-3 and scored to power the Highlanders. Teddy Perkin recorded five of his six outs via the K while other hits were supplied by Mateus Feick (RBI), Drew Mullaney, Tyler Boviard, Matt McDonald (RBI), Jonah Richardson (RBI), Cole Reeves and Joe Gaudin.
St. Mary’s Lynn 5, Bishop Fenwick 3: Senior captain Odin Garron knocked in a run in the seventh but the rally ended there for the Crusaders (12-5). Henry Van Faasen had two of his team’s four hits in addition to fanning eight Spartans in five innings pitched. Andrew Kiricoples also had two RBI and threw two scoreless.
BC High 9, St. John’s Prep 3: Connor Durney (2-for-3) stroked an RBI double and St. John’s (7-7) had a 3-1 lead but top-ranked BC High came back with eight runs over the last three innings. Brady Baldassare also had a hit with an RBI with Maxwell Parent and Chris Vargas also coming up with base knocks.
GIRLS TENNIS
Marblehead 5, Gloucester 0: Straight set wins across the board lifted the Magicians to victory. Samara Dosch (6-2, 6-2), Callie Gilmore (6-0, 6-0) and Sophie Li (6-2, 6-0) took home wins, as did the doubles teams of Joy Meshulam and Caroline Bruett (6-2, 6-4) as well as Lilly O’Keefe and and Harper Mooney (6-1, 6-2).
Masconomet 5, Winthrop 0: Now 8-5 on the season, the Chieftains got lost only one game in breezing to victory. Ria Kundaliya was ahead 1-0 at first singles before her opponent suffered match ending injury; Sienna Anvari, Ella Mossey 6-0 6-0, and the first doubles team of Gabby Fraser and Sakura St.Onge all prevailed 6-0, 6-0; and the second doubles team of Liv Kingsbury and Ava LeBlanc cruised, 6-1, 6-0.
Beverly 5, Salem 0: A sweep on the road enabled the Panthers to improve to 8-4. Singles wins came from Adeline Kontos (6-1, 6-0), Olivia Devereaux (6-0, 6-1) and Liliana Jimenez. It was more of the same in doubles as Claire Fitzgerald and Caroline Kearney (6-0, 6-4) as well as in their first varsity match, Helena Bellanti and Avery Hoehn (4-6, 6-4, 10-7), coming off the court trimphant.
Danvers 4, Saugus 1: Josie Vogel (6-3, 3-6, 6-2), Paige Sherman (6-3, 6-2) and Usabel Beaudoin (6-2, 6-2) picked up W’s in singles play to guide the Falcons. Avary Hartigan and Molly Verhoosky also picked up another win in doubles, taking a three-setter (6-2, 3-6, 6-3).
Swampscott 5, Peabody 0: Straight set wins were the order of the day for the Big Blue, who got singles decisions from Ginger Gregoire (6-0, 6-0), Ana Eccles (6-2, 6-4) and Lilly Carr (6-0, 6-2). The victories in doubles came from the tandems of Ava O’Donnell and Alexia O’Donnell (6-2, 6-2), plus Eve Byrne and Sasha Fafel (6-1, 6-0).
Hamilton-Wenham 5, Pentucket 0: Julia Harnisch and Sienna Tripp (2-6, 6-3, 6-0) earned their first varsity win at first doubles for the Generals, as did the second doubles tandem of Quinn Daly and Dana Wheeler (6-0, 6-0). Singles winners for H-W (now 7-2) were Emily McIntosh (6-0, 6-0), Krishna Guruju (6-3, 6-0) and Charlotte Ireland (6-2, 6-0).
Ipswich 4, North Reading 1: Now 9-3, junior Sarah Belford clinched the match at third singles for the Tigers with a 6-4, 6-4 victory. Abbie Allen and her sister Phoebe won at first doubles, 6-2, 6-2, and senior Alex Angell and freshman Gwen Bowser did so at second doubles, 6-0, 6-2. Sophomore Leila Harb came back and won at second singles 3-6, 6-4 (10-7).
BOYS TENNIS
Beverly 4, Salem 1: Improving to 5-5 on the season, the Panthers picked up wins from Giacomo Guarienti (6-0, 6-0) at first singles and Xander Alexeyev (6-0, 6-1) in the No. 3 spot. Both doubles teams swept their matches as Nate Fein and Jackson Maker prevailed (6-0, 6-0), as did Filip Bellanti and Ben Walsh Dollois (6-1, 6-2).
St. John’s Prep 5, Xaverian 0: John DeAngelis (6-0, 6-1), Rudr Malayya (6-0, 6-1) and Boris Kouzminov (6-1, 6-0) barely broke a sweat in winning their singles matches for the Eagles. In doubles, Ciaran De Buy and Wade Evitts (6-1, 6-4) and Evan Haykal and Alex Sideriris (6-1, 7-6) completed the sweep.
Marblehead 4, Gloucester 1: Ty Cooper (6-4, 6-4) and TJ Kelly (6-1, 6-2) were winners at first and second singles for Marblehead (now 11-2). The doubles tandems of Adam Loughlin and Alex Boehning (6-0, 6-2), plus Cordt Menzler and Filip Wabno (6-3, 6-2) helped cement the victory.
North Reading 4, Ipswich 1: Cole Flather picked up the Tigers’ win by prevailing at third singles, 6-1, 6-2.
St. Mary’s Lynn 4, Danvers 1: Jack Chronis had a fine day at third singles for the Blue-and-White, earning himself a 6-3, 6-3 decision. Connor DiTomaso went three sets at No. 2 singles for DHS before falling, 6-2, 3-6, 10-1, as did the second doubles team of Kyle Sillars and Graham Corbin, 2-6, 6-2, 11-9.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
Waltham 3, Essex Tech 0: The Hawks fell in straight sets.
St. John’s Prep 3, Catholic Memorial 0: Senior Matt Nazzaro led the Eagles with nine kills and seven digs while senior Andrew Budrow had five kills and four blocks and classmate John Budrow had seven spikes with an ace.
