KEYSER, W.Va. — WVU Potomac State’s streak of four consecutive trips to the NJCAA Division 2 World Series came to an end Sunday with an 11-6 loss to Cecil College in the Region 20 title game.
The Catamounts (33-7), needing to win twice, were tied with Cecil at 2 in the fifth inning before a lengthy weather delay.
Cecil plated six runs in the fifth following the rain and three more in the sixth for an 11-2 lead. Potomac State plated two runs in the sixth and seventh innings to chip away, but it wasn’t enough.
Alyssa Abel and Skyla Compton hit two-run home runs in the sixth and seventh innings, respectively. Compton also doubled, and Lacie Miller had a two-bagger.
Cecil’s Taylor Stapleford was the winning pitcher, allowing four runs on six hits in six innings, striking out 11 and walking two.
Cecil’s Kylee Bergman belted a three-run home run and had a two-run double.
Delaney Randolph took the loss for Potomac State, allowing eight runs (five earned) on five hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Potomac State advanced to the region final with a 10-6 win over Southern Maryland in the semifinals on Saturday.
The Catamounts led 4-0 after three innings and never looked back.
Jaianna Wickline (Mountain Ridge) hit a two-run home run in the fifth inning and Maddie Fields followed with a three-run blast in the sixth.
Wickline drove in four runs while Fields added three.
Randolph went the distance, allowing three earned runs on nine hits with no walks and two strikeouts.
Miranda Twigg was charged with 10 earned runs for the Hawks.
Potomac State lost earlier Saturday, 7-2, to Cecil.
The Catamounts scored on singles from Randolph and Compton in the final two innings, but it was too late for a rally after falling in a 7-0 hole.
Potomac State’s Lacie Miller was charged with five earned runs.
