PLATTSBURGH — Spring is here, and that means it’s GreenUP! time in Plattsburgh.
In honor of Earth Day, residents and students are encouraged to get outside in your neighborhood, local city or town park, the downtown district, SUNY campus or the City Beach to pick up litter and organic waste, plant trees or flowers, and learn more about how to support our environment.
Register as an individual or a group at tinyurl.com/amnp2j7d.
Registering will enter you to win prizes and help the city coordinate the clean up effort.
Garbage bags, gloves and paper yard waste bags will be available to pick up at Trinity Park, located at 1 Trinity Place, and the Town Hall, located at 151 Banker Road, April 18 from 9 and 10 a.m.
In partnership with C-TURN CFE, volunteers will also have the option to collect tobacco waste separately during the cleanup.
Items such as cigarette butts, vape cartridges and tobacco packaging will be collected and used to highlight the environmental impact of tobacco waste. Ziploc bags will be given out at supply pick-ups for this effort. There will be designated labeled totes at the drop off sites in which tobacco waste can be dropped off.
EARTH DAY IN TRINITY PARK
The Plattsburgh Climate Task Force will host an Earth Day celebration in Trinity Park from noon to 3 p.m.
Visit the park for an open mic, activities for children and to meet local organizations working toward a greener community, such as Lake Champlain Sea Grant, Point Au Roche State Park, Cornell Cooperative Extension and more.
The city and town of Plattsburgh will host an Ice Cream Exchange. Mr. Ding-a-ling will hand out free ice cream to those who drop off their bagged trash from the community clean up, while supplies last.
“As the world begins to thaw after a long North Country winter, Earth Day is the perfect time to celebrate the land, water and people who make this community such a great place to live,” Ellie Jent, co-president of the city’s Climate Task Force, said in a press release.
EVENT INFORMATION
This event is being coordinated by the city and town of Plattsburgh, the city’s Climate Task Force, C-TURN CFE and SUNY Plattsburgh.
“Earth Day is a chance for our community to turn awareness into action. GreenUP gives residents, students and local organizations an easy way to get outside, work together and make a visible difference in our parks, neighborhoods and public spaces,” Emma Stewart, community engagement coordinator for the City of Plattsburgh, said in the release.
The clean up is intended for public spaces in the community — sidewalks, parks, etc. — and the Town and City of Plattsburgh will not accept refuse from residents’ personal homes.
Garbage collected from public spaces can be dropped off at City Hall, Melissa Penfield Park, the City Beach and Peter Blumette Park.
