Central Catholic has chosen a very familiar name to lead its football program.
John Dubzinski, who won a state title at North Andover High, has been hired as Central Catholic head varsity football coach, the school announced on Friday.
“I am absolutely thrilled, honored and humble to be the new Central Catholic football coach,” said Dubzinski. “It’s an unbelievable opportunity to become the head coach at a program with the reputation of Central Catholic. When I saw the job was open, it was a no-brainer. Jobs like this open only so often.”
Dubzinski replaces John Sexton, who stepped down after three seasons and a 19-14 record. The Raiders went 8-4 and advanced to the Division 1 semifinals this past fall.
“We are excited to announce the appointment of John Dubzinski as our new varsity football coach,” said Central Catholic in a release. “Coach Dubzinski brings over two decades of experience as an educator and proven track record of success as a head football coach. He has had success at two schools, where he built and sustained highly competitive programs while emphasizing discipline, accountability and academic achievement.”
Dubzinski brings a wealth of head coaching experience to the Raiders.
After serving as Arlington High coach from 2011-14, Dubzinski took over the North Andover football program in 2015, and in 10 seasons compiled a 59-47 record.
His greatest accomplishment came in 2018, when the Scarlet Knights won the Division 2 state championship, the first in program history, finishing a perfect 12-0, including a win over Central Catholic. That fall, Dubzinski was one of 32 finalists for the Don Shula NFL High School Coach of the Year Award and became the first coach to repeat as Eagle-Tribune football Coach of the Year. The Knights also went to the Division 2 semifinals in 2017 and 2019.
Dubzinski stepped down as North Andover football coach following the 2024 season, citing family obligations. He’s still a teacher at North Andover High and lives in Andover.
“I couldn’t be more excited for the opportunity,” said Dubzinski. “The reputation of Central Catholic is just outstanding. They stand for academics, have a great alumni network and lots of support, and they love their sports at Central. I went to the (Division 1) state championship basketball game on Sunday, and the atmosphere was unbelievable. I can’t wait to start building relationships with these student/athletes.”
