Let’s hear it for the Oneonta cheerleaders … again.
The Yellowjackets won their third section title in four years in co-ed competitive cheerleading with a win at the Section IV finals on Saturday, Feb. 28, at Chenango Valley High School in Binghamton.
Oneonta scored 67.40 points edging Johnson City by 1.3 points. Chenango Forks finished third with 65 points.
The Yellowjackets won back-to-back Section IV titles in the sport in 2023 and 2024.
Oneonta will compete for a state title at the New York State Public High School Athletic Association Cheerleading Championships on Saturday, March 7, at Visions Arena in Binghamton.
BOWLING
Section IV State Qualifier
Sidney/Unatego will be well represented at NYSPHSAA Bowling Championships.
The boys team won a Section IV Division II title at the State Qualifier on Saturday in Waverly, while Sidney freshman Stacey Tuttle was an individual qualifier and will represent the girls in the state tournament.
The Sidney/Unatego boys won their title with 8,836 total pins, 95 more than second-place Waverly. Bainbridge-Guilford placed fourth with 8,587, while Unadilla Valley placed seventh in the 10-team field with 7,960.
Ryan Larson from B-G also qualified for the state tournament, placing sixth among Division II boys with 1,925 total pins. Larson is the only boy from the Midstate Athletic Conference to qualify as an individual.
Tuttle is the only girl from the MAC to qualify. She placed sixth Saturday with 1,545 total pins.
Windsor won the Division II girls title with 7,544 total pins, with Unadilla Valley in second with 7,122. Greene/Oxford placed third with 7,039 pins wile Sidney/Unatego placed sixth in the eight-team field with 6,565 pins.
The Division II state championships will take place in Syracuse on Friday, March 13.
Section III State Qualifier
The Hawkeye bowlers finished their season at day one of the Section III State Qualifier on Thursday, Feb. 26, in Syracuse.
The Section III C/D champions bowled in the two-day qualifier to make the state tournament but did not advance past the first day.
“Even though the outcome wasn’t what we wanted, I am still proud of these boys and the entire team for what they accomplished this year,” Coach Braedy Sickler said.
VOLLEYBALL
C-R boys win section title
Cobleskill-Richmondville won its first Section II Class B boys volleyball title in a decade with a four-set upset of top-seeded Hudson, 27-25, 22-25, 25-13, 25-15, on Wednesday, Feb. 25, at Colonie High School.
Coach Justin Davis was a C-R player the last time the Bulldogs earned a championship title, in 2016.
“The boys played their hearts out and showed up determined to earn the section title,” Davis said. “They put in the work and effort over these last few weeks, and to see their hard work and effort payoff is every coach’s dream.”
Cobleskill-Richmondville (10-9) lost in the regional final on Saturday in Watervliet to Section III Class B champ Vernon-Verona-Sherrill, 25-17, 25-13, 25-15. V-V-S finished the season 19-0.
