NEWBURYPORT — Avita of Newburyport, a Northbridge Companies memory care community, is spotlighting its partnership with Hannah Ritchie, currently serving as Miss Goffstown through the Miss New Hampshire Scholarship Program.
Through her community service initiative, Crafting Connections: An Alzheimer’s Project, Ritchie is working alongside Avita to bring creativity, connection, and joy to residents living with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia.
“Alzheimer’s disease does not define a person,” Ritchie said. “Beyond the diagnosis are individuals with stories, talents, and personalities. Through creativity and connection, their sense of self can be preserved and celebrated.”
At Avita of Newburyport, Ritchie volunteers regularly, leading and participating in hands-on craft activities designed to spark conversation, stimulate cognition, and foster meaningful social interaction. From painting and seasonal crafts to shared laughter during group activities, her presence has become a welcome addition to the community, according to officials there.
“Hannah has been a valued volunteer at Avita of Newburyport for the past couple of years.” Program Director Kelly Gould said. “She is a bright and compassionate person who connects effortlessly with our residents through her warm smile, kindness and patience. Her presence brings genuine joy to our community, and we truly look forward to continuing our ongoing collaboration.”
Crafting Connections is designed for growth beyond Avita. Ritchie is forming partnerships with local companies to secure donated art supplies, which will be assembled into craft boxes for underfunded memory care communities across New Hampshire.
Research shows that creative activities can reduce feelings of isolation and depression in individuals living with Alzheimer’s and dementia. At Avita of Newburyport, the benefits are seen firsthand, increased socialization, engagement, pride in accomplishment, and brighter days built around meaningful connection.
As Ritchie continues her year of service as Miss Goffstown, she remains committed to expanding Crafting Connections and inspiring others to get involved.
“If one person can make an impact,” Ritchie said, “imagine what we can do together.”
