KEYSER, W.Va — Mineral County commissioners voted 2-1 during a meeting Tuesday to relieve Emergency Services Director Luke McKenzie of his duties.
“I can confirm that Luke McKenzie was released from his duties as the Mineral County Director of Emergency Services effective immediately,” Commissioner Jason Whitlock said Wednesday.
Whitlock made the motion, which was seconded by Commissioner Charles “Dutch” Staggs, according to Whitlock.
The vote followed an executive session.
“I’m not able to share any details because we were in executive session,” Whitlock said in reference to the reason McKenzie was terminated.
Commissioner Roger Leatherman voted against the motion.
“… I think this is a mistake,” Leatherman said.
Sheriff Joel Whisner will oversee the 911 center operations until the position is filled, according to Whitlock.
McKenzie was hired as Emergency Management director in 2016. In 2021, he took on dual roles, also serving as the county’s administrator.
Last year, he said he would step down from the administrator position and continue directing Emergency Management.
The county hired Kandace Lancaster as administrator in November.
