BOYS BASKETBALL
Salem 77, Saugus 48: Elian Rodriguez, a junior captain, became the ninth boy in Salem High history to reach 1,000 career points on a first half slash while finishing the game with 27 points, five assists and a steal. The Witches (9-1 overall) also saw freshman Cleto Deng score 13 with seven rebounds, Sean Murphy scored 10 and Nate Lane hand out six assists.
Swampscott 72, Gloucester 32: Teddy O’Neill scored 18, Connor Chiarello ran the floor with 14 points and five assists and the Big Blue (10-1) were excellent defensively from wire-to-wire. Michael Lutko added 11 points with six rebounds and Dean Collins scored eight.
Essex Tech 65, Northeast 63: Casey Collins canned the go-head three pointer with 2.6 seconds to play and the Hawks (4-4) rallied from 12 down in the first half to win it. Jack Hanchett led Essex Tech with 17 points and Jovan Quiles scored 15.
Beverly 92, Peabody 43: The Panthers (8-3) opened things up with huge second and third quarters and saw 13 different players score. Senior guard Jacob Klass had a team-high 20 while Eli Landman shot the ball well and finished with 18.
Peabody (2-10) got 17 points from Jeremiah Agbonavbare in addition to nine from Dom Domenici and eight from Mark Mendonca.
Marblehead 71, Danvers 56: Despite the loss, the Falcons (now 5-6) received 13 points off the bench from sophomore Miguel Mendez, plus 10 points apiece from senior starters Luca Tirella and Bubba Martin.
Masconomet 68, Methuen 38: Thomas Denton carried in the load in the first half and Jimmy Farrell had ten in the third quarter alone as the Chieftains improved to 8-1 with one of their best defensive games of the season.
BC High 69, St. John’s Prep 60: The Eagles hung in there on the road against a tough Catholic Conference foe.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Peabody 57, Beverly 53: Sophia Coburn scored 15 and had 10 rebounds with three assists to spark the Tanners (7-5), who came from eight down in the second half to win with a huge fourth quarter rally. Aliana Ryan also scored 15 with five steals, Olivia Gaynor scored 11, Lizzy Bettencourt grabbed 10 rebounds and Avery Bettencourt corralled eight.
Kayla Everett had an outstanding game for the Panthers (2-10) with 16 points.
Swampscott 71, Gloucester 58: Sophomore Anna Kanders poured in a career-high 33 points (the most by a North Shore girl in a game this winter) and added five assists to help the Big Blue (7-4) maintain control of the NEC Lynch. Junior Cecilia Tripp also had a career-best night with 18 points and senior captain Sam Ward scored seven to go with seven rebounds.
SWIMMING
Danvers 92, Salem 84: Double winners Taylor Landry (diving, 50 free) and Max Scott (200-IM, 100 breast) helped the Falcons even their record at 2-2. Zachary Cotter also won the 100 free, the 200 free relay of Cotter, Scott, Chris Pescione and Caleb Clark had a strong win and Agnes Osminkin and Braeden Serino delivered key seconds. For Salem, Grant Dwyer took both the 100 fly and 100 back and Aubrey Dwyer won the 200 free and 500 free.
GIRLS TRACK
Ipswich 74, Lynnfield 26: The Tigers (4-0) locked up their third straight CAL Baker title as Alana Novello won the dash and the hurdles. Also winning were Una Whyte (300), Soren Shearer (600), Annabella Ma (1000), Mary Love (2-mile), Kameya Perron (high jump) and Bree Doucet (shot put). Ipswich also took both the 4×200 (Whyte, Delia Cashman, Bella Bruno, Akina Perron) and 4×400 (Sophie Magers, Ma, Stella Whitter, Shearer.
BOYS TRACK
Ipswich 53, Lynnfield 47: Ange Tsibambe won the hurdles and the 300 and ran a leg of the winning 4×400 relay that sealed the meet for the Tigers (2-2). Other members of the clutch relay were Joe Wertz, Will Gromko and Alex Young, who won both the mile and the 1000. Wertz picked up first in the 600, Peter Mooradd won the high jump and Luke Wile was first in the shot put.
WOMEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 60, Curry 45: It was smooth sailing for the Gulls (10-7) thanks to a game high 16 points from Tricia Wladkowski, who also grabbed nine rebounds and had two steals. Emma Shinney added ten with seven assists and Lily Cooper provided a nice lift off the bench with 11 points.
Johnson & Wales 98, Gordon 36: The Scots (4-13) managed just three points in the first quarter, falling behind by 18 and never recovering. Woynitu Ciccarello led the locals with eight and Sophie Peters scored seven.
MEN’S COLLEGE BASKETBALL
Endicott 84, Curry 76: The No. 17 ranked Gulls (16-1) won their tenth straight game as Marcus Montagino scored 25 points and Jeff Hill was more than complimentary with 20 of his own. Elijah Kinney also pitched in with 17 points plus 11 rebounds.
Gordon 86, Johnson & Wales 64: Isaac Jarvis led the way with 24 points plus ten boards and the Scots got a satisfying conference win on the road. Chiko Kalu also scored 15 and Ryan Brooks had a dozen.
