There have been some great football players to pass through Triton Regional.
From the Verrier brothers back in the day near the start of the “Border Battle,” to names like Shane Lee, Brendan O’Neil, Doug Foley and Liam Spillane. All of them — and so many more — carved out their own little piece of Vikings history during their tenures in Byfield.
But for so many school records now: They all are looking up at Carl Lucy.
After putting together an historic season, the Triton senior is being named our 2025 Daily News Football MVP. The CAL Kinney Offensive Player of the Year nearly hit the illustrious 2K rushing yards milestone, finishing atop the area with 229 carries, 1,928 rushing yards, 30 total touchdowns and 184 total points. And adding up his weekly domination, Lucy would leave the year breaking Triton records in:
–Rushing yards in a game: 328.
–Rushing yards in a season: 1,928.
–Single-season touchdowns: 30.
–All-time leading scorer: 262 points.
–Yards per carry: 8.4.
And do you want the true definition of a Most Valuable Player?
Lucy’s total offensive yards: 2,037.
Triton’s total offensive yards: 2,992.
So, yeah, that means Lucy accounted for 68.1% of all Triton’s offensive yards this year.
… And that’s not even taking into account his work as a kick/punt returner.
“I remember telling Carl early on that I was going to use him a lot this year, so get ready,” said first-year Triton coach Ed Melanson. “But Carl is just an awesome football player and a great kid. He’s never someone you have to worry about putting in the work.”
In every aspect, Lucy was the total package this year.
A team captain, Lucy led Triton (4-7) to the Division 6 playoffs after the team was competitive in every regular season game. The Honor Roll student was only held under 100 rushing yards twice: Againt an Amesbury team that would make the Division 7 Super Bowl, and against rival Pentucket on Thanksgiving when he had a 102-degree fever.
And when it came to his dominance, nobody was left out.
The best team that Triton played all year was No. 2 Abington in the first round of the playoffs, and Lucy had 198 yards and 3 touchdowns on 17 carries. Then North Reading was a play or two away from making the Division 5 Super Bowl, and Lucy still piled up 153 yards and 3 TDs on 23 carries in that game. There was also a 17-carry, 110-yard and 3-TD day against a Manchester Essex team that ended up being a top-5 seed in Division 7.
Lucy originally broke Triton’s single-game rushing record when he exploded for 293 yards and 4 TDs on just 20 carries in a win over Lynnfield. But he would break that mark — while also breaking the school’s single-season record — when he only need 17 carries to pile up 328 yards and 4 TDs in a win over Salem. He had 221 rushing yards and 4 TDs against Hamilton-Wenham, 171 yards and 4 TDs against Ipswich, 153 yards and 3 TDs against Newburyport and 122 yards and a score against Essex Tech.
Lucy would like to continue playing the sport at the next level.
And after the season he just had, his college offers most definitely doubled.
