XENIA, Ohio — No. 3 Calvary Christian fell to Lighthouse Baptist, 2-1, Friday to finish runner-up at the National Christian School Athletic Association tournament.
Calvary (20-4-1) got on the board first at the 7:07 mark of the first half when Jake MacGray made a nice assist to Sammy Scritchfield, who drilled it from the top of the 18-yard box.
Scritchfield was fouled from behind in the box in the final 10 minutes before halftime and received an injury to his shoulder. The play appeared to have warranted a penalty kick, but no call was made by the referee.
Both teams battled through the rest of the first half to a 1-0 Calvary lead.
That remained the score until 14:14 into the second half when Angel Ramos of Lighthouse found an equalizer, and Hudson Tamung gave it the lead with a goal at the 66:50 mark.
With the clock winding down, Scritchfield made a long cross to Gerald Mihailovich who put the ball in the goal, but an offsides call was made and the clock expired on the Eagles’ season.
Lighthouse Baptist had the advantage in shots 13-8, while Calvary had the edge in corner kicks 7-2.
Lighthouse keeper Tyler Shaffer made six saves. Calvary’s Peyton Poland had nine and Andrew Carrington finished with two.
While Calvary didn’t have a storybook end to the season, the Eagles tied a school records for wins with 20 and captured the Mason-Dixon Christian Conference championship.
Calvary 3, Portersville 2
Calvary Christian defeated Ohio’s Portersville Christian, 3-2, on Thursday in the NCSAAT semifinals.
The Eagles led 2-1 at the half and went up by two goals with 52:13 left when Scritchfield made a left to right cross to Poland, who was there waiting inside the 6-yard line for a goal.
Calvary head coach David Ziler moved Poland, the Eagles’ starting goalkeeper, to the field in the second half to get more offense going.
A Calvary handball in the box with 20 minutes left awarded Portersville a hand ball for a PK goal, but the Eagles held on.
Calvary got on the board first at the 5:17 mark after Scritchfield intercepted a cleared ball, dribbled around three defenders and booted the ball into the goal from the top of the 18-yard box.
Portersville scored in the 25th minute when a ball that was trying to be cleared by a Calvary player went into the goal for an own goal.
Calvary went back in front when Scritchfield sent a nice cross from the far left to the far goal post to freshman Ryan Davis, who kicked it in with nine minutes left in the half for a 2-1 edge.
