Merrimack College head coach Gabe Mejail was honored, as he became the long tenured head coach in NCAA women’s soccer history, then his Warriors opened the season by playing the University of Vermont to a 1-1 draw on Thursday night.
Former Timberlane star Bella Keogh helped give Merrimack a 1-0 lead in the first half. Keogh’s long ball through the middle of the field found Kyle Fuller, who slotted home the shot for her first Warriors goal in her first start.
Warrior goalie Kaitlyn Brewi made seven saves in the opening in the opening 10 minutes, and nine stops in the first half. She finished the game with 16 saves, including a huge, sprawling stop on a breakaway in the game’s final seconds.
Vermont’s lone goal came in the first minutes of the second half.
Merrimack stay home on Sunday, Aug. 17, as the Warriors welcome neighboring rival UMass Lowell at 4 P.M. at Martone-Mejail Field
