Kattar broke foot in boutCalvin Kattar’s loss a few weeks ago comes with an asterisk. Kattar lost a unanimous decision to up-and-comer Steve Garcia in Nashville, Tenn. on July 12.
But Katter later revealed on Instagram that he broke his foot in two places in the first round:
”Pushed through a lot of just to get to the fight and even more when it started. Broke my foot in the first round in two places but content I was able to make it through to the end even though came up short.”
He also congratulated Garcia, who moved up to the 15th spot in the UFC featherweight rankings, bumping Kattar.
Devanney starts with new team
It was a wild week for Cam Devanney recently, which included his being promoted to the Kansas City Royals and then traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates.
The Pirates optioned the former Central Catholic star to their AAA affiliate in Indianapolis.
Devanney started at shortstop in the opener on Friday, going 1-for-4, and then played third base on Sunday, going 1-for-3.
Keegan in Worcester in late August
Unless there is a callup to the big club, which is a possibility for Methuen native Dom Keegan, his Durham Bulls AAA team will be making the trek to Worcester to play the Woo Sox Aug. 26-31.
It will be Keegan’s first trek to play pro ball in New England.
Keegan is hitting .300 as the starting catcher for the Tampa Bay Rays affiliate, with 5 homers and 17 RBI in just 28 games.
Some Red Sox-Cubs history
Local baseball historian and long-time Eagle-Tribune reader David Bontempo, of Methuen, noted some Red Sox-Cubs history.
The Cubs were the first team in the 20th century to win two World Series in 1907 and 1908.
The Red Sox were the first team in the 21st century to win two World Series in 2004 and 2007.
The two teams have met in one World Series, 2018, which the Red Sox won in six games, 4-2.
After the Sox win 2018, the teams combined to lose nine World Series; the Cubs in 1929, 1932, 1938 and 1945; the Red Sox in 1946, 1967, 1975 and 1986.
The two historic franchise are also bonded by their ballparks, Fenway Park (1912) and Weeghman Park (1914) later renamed Wrigley Field in 1927.
Great stuff!
