Cornell Cooperative Extension of Niagara County (CCE Niagara) is seeking community members to fill three vacancies on its board of directors. CCE Niagara is well known in the community for youth engagement and leadership programs, such as 4H; as well as Master Gardeners, the Veggie Van, and the Niagara County Fair. Interested parties should want to make an impact on the lives of children, families, farmers, seniors, and all residents of Niagara County.
“It’s a common misconception that you need to be involved with our flagship programs, like 4H and agriculture, to be a board member. In fact, we are actively seeking residents from different neighborhoods and with different backgrounds and expertise. Folks with backgrounds in law, marketing, accounting, fundraising, education or other specialties are strongly encouraged to apply,” Justin Rogers, CCE Niagara executive director, said.
CCE Niagara serves residents of Niagara County through the following five program areas:
• Agriculture & food systems
• Health & nutrition
• 4-H/youth development
• Community & economic vitality
• Environment & natural resources
Additionally, CCE also organizes the Niagara County Fair each year.
The board of directors is the governing body of CCE and is responsible for overall program direction and quality. These volunteers also establish strategic directions, ensure adequate resources and assets, and oversee effective stewardship. It is through the participants on the Board and committees that the entire focus of CCE Niagara County is determined.
“Anytime someone is asked to volunteer their time, it can be easy to think “What’s in it for me?” said Katie Jazstrab, operations and development manager at CCE Niagara. “Our board members become part of a CCE family, gaining community connections, building new friendships, and feeling a sense of pride and fulfillment that comes with seeing positive impacts on your community.”
If you bring a new perspective, fresh ideas, and want to join a group of Niagara County neighbors who work together to better their community, consider joining the CCE Niagara Board. Simply fill out the candidate application. Candidates can direct their questions to Mary Schroeder, nominating committee chair, at gar2field@aol.com.
Candidates must be Niagara County residents and over the age of 18. Board meetings are held once a month on the CCE grounds located at 4487 Lake Ave. in Lockport and remotely as needed. All meetings are typically in the evening on weekdays. Nominated candidates will be notified in advance of the annual meeting scheduled for Oct. 23. New board members will be publicly announced at that meeting.
