PLATTSBURGH — A Plattsburgh hotel was reportedly struck by lightning Thursday night.
Plattsburgh’s District 3 Fire Department posted on its Facebook on Thursday that they, along with Morrisonville Fire, were dispatched to the Days Inn by Wyndham on Cornelia Street for a report of smoke in the building at 8:17 p.m.
According to the post, it was indicated there was a lightning strike on the building, which was the “probable cause of the smoke condition.”
“Command requested additional mutual aid and standby crews to backfill the two stations,” the post stated. “Investigation did reveal a lightening strike on the roof in the area of the elevator shafts, but no active fire or extension into the structure.”
District 3 wrote that other responding departments included South Plattsburgh Fire Department, Plattsburgh City Fire, Cumberland Head Fire Department, Beekmantown Volunteer Fire Department,Cadyville Fire Department, CVPH EMS, County Cars 1, 7, 14, 15 and 19, Clinton County Sheriff’s Office, New York State Police, Town of Plattsburgh Code Enforcement and NYSEG Electric and Gas.
Peru Fire Department and West Chazy Fire Department provided stand by crews in station.
District 3 Fire Chief Greg Burnell said Friday there were no injuries reported from the lightning strike but guests were disrupted for about an hour and a half. He added that everything went “smooth” during their response and he was thankful for the mutual aid they received.
Town of Plattsburgh Supervisor Michael Cashman praised the quick response by all departments.
“Thursday night’s response was a clear reminder of the strength that comes from working together. Volunteer firefighters and emergency crews from across the region didn’t hesitate they showed up, side by side, ready to protect,” Cashman said in a statement Friday.
“It’s moments like these that show just how deeply they care. Whether you’re a resident or just visiting, you can feel confident knowing this community is watched over by people who treat every call like it’s their own family on the line.”
