Turning wood into functional works and pieces of art is the practice of woodturning. Highly decorative Christmas ornaments, bowls and sculptures are among the many exquisite objects that can be created.
The Cumberland Woodturners in association with the Plateau Creative Arts Center is offering an opportunity to learn woodturning. Students will complete a safety training course and ongoing training sessions with members of The Cumberland Woodturners.
Students will be taught how to safely work with high-speed wood lathes, routers, sanders, planers, bandsaws and chisels.
After successful completion of the safety training, students will receive a certificate that will allow them to have access to the Roane State College woodturning facilities for a monthly use fee.
Participants who join the Cumberland Woodturners organization will also have access to the facilities at the Tennessee College of Applied Technology at 910 Miller Ave., Bay 308, in Crossville.
Cumberland Woodturners members have access to club training programs, supplies, donated wood and ongoing support and mentoring.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Community Foundation of Middle Tennessee and funded by William N. Rollins Fund for the Arts, students will enroll at a reduced fee of $40 for Art Guild members, $55 for guests. Go to plateauarts.org/classes, drop by the Plateau Creative Arts Center at 451 Lakeview Drive, Fairfield Glade or call 931-707-7249 to register. After students have registered, they will be contacted by a member of the Cumberland Woodturners to arrange an individualized training schedule.
Training dates and times are flexible.
